'One of the nastiest countries to deal with': Donald Trump slams Canada amid tariff war

"One of the nastiest countries to deal with is Canada. Now, this was Trudeau — good old Justin. I call him 'Governor Trudeau.' His people were nasty and they weren't telling the truth," the Republican leader told Fox News host Laura Ingraham during an interview.

When Ingraham suggested that Trump's policies could benefit the Carney-led Liberal Party's electoral prospects - Canada is to hold federal polls by October - the latter responded that it would be easier to work with the Liberals than the Conservatives, Canada's main opposition party which has consistently led opinion polls.

"I don't care. I think it's easier to deal, actually, with a Liberal and maybe they're going to win, but I don't really care. It doesn't matter to me at all," he stated

Trump further said that Pierre Poilievre, Canada's leader of opposition, is "no friend of mine." "The Conservative that's running is, stupidly, no friend of mine. I don't know him, but he said negative things," he said without naming Poilievre, who is running to be Canada's prime minister. The Liberals, who have been in power since Trudeau was elected PM in 2015, just weeks ago looked headed toward certain defeat to the Conservatives in the election, which must be held by October 20 but could happen earlier. But they are mounting a major comeback after Trudeau stepped down and Carney, a former central banker, was elected by the Liberals as their leader. Several recent opinion polls have shown the Liberals closing the gap or even ahead of the Conservatives.

Don’t quite get the strategy but it is entertaining…

Which is weird, because they are so polite. But yeah, as a radical socialist dictatorship, they are pretty nasty.

I know it’s all a joke, but I don’t want Canada to be part of the US...

I remember stopping by Canada en route to Alaska...you can just feel right away, regardless of the English...”you’re not in Kansas anymore” —the vibes are just so different.

Socially their mass acceptance of things like Euthanasia I find disturbing...

Large parts of western Canada would make your ultra conservatives look like leftists.

Interesting. Any further on the vibe, what you saw or experienced that felt different?

I suspect a lot of Canadians are essentially hostages. The truckers convoy showed the world that, and exposed the fake politeness of that authoritarian regime.

I wouldn't want that either. Alberta would probably be a good fit. Maybe Saskatchewan. As for the rest, no thanks.

Things vary state by state in America, but you just know regardless of state eventually that... “it’s America”...

Seattle feels “American” as did Alaska upon arrival.

But then that patch of Canada in between did not.

Some of it’s external, like the way products look in stores...The demeanor of the people, the subtle accents. They carry themselves differently! More aloof. It’s not bad or good, just different...

Will say though, much prefer UK to Canada.

I spent a few days in Canada a number of years in the Ottawa area (to witness some explosives tests) and I didn’t find Canadians particularly nice or friendly. They seemed to have a bit of an inferiority complex about the U.S. that manifests itself in a thinly veiled hostility. I hate to generalize about people, but that was my experience.

I worked Ina town in Maine that got a lot,of Canadians during the summer months as it was a beach town- and I found the majority of them to be cheap, rude, and demanding. No one at th3 resteraunt liked waiting on them. Some were fine, but not many in my experience.

I wonder if Trump is trying to help Poilievre by saying he’s “no friend of mine”. A bit of reverse psychology.

Yes, Manitoba if you can get rid of the part next to Ontario!

I saw a good WWII yarn about some German survivors from a U-boat who land onshore in
Canada. The movie is "The 49th Parallel". It is a Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger film,
and boasts a stellar cast.

It shows the people of the prairie provences. What struck me is how their backstory was very
similar to the American prairie, ethnic newcomers and their families farming and homesteading,
starting a better life in the New World.

The US government can probably stockpile all the aluminum it needs for military use.

Steel might be selectively tariffed, with steels of automotive and military use tariffed.

Another possibility is an agreement with the US government [treaty or manufacturer] requiring supply to the US at average penulimate year price plus CPI price adjustment in exchange for tariff reduction.

During the Biden Administration the FBI and RCMP in Canada probing Indian government efforts against Sikh nationalists considered terrorists by the Modi government in India.

This includes the murder of a Sikh leader in British Columbia Canada.

Now I see Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined Truth Social this week.

The Indian media is good at telling us any bad news from Pakistan and recently Canada has come in for similar treatment.

Any country that would give that [un]Freeland woman a position of power, is already well down the road to ruin.
