Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX’s Starship will head to Mars at the end of 2026. The ship will be carrying Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot. The tech billionaire said that if all goes well, humans could be on the red planet by 2029, although he admitted that 2031 is more likely.

I’ve got a round trip ticket to Mars I bought on Temu pretty cheap so I’m excited. I didn’t know I’d be sharing bunks with a robot though.
Mars will be a 1 way trip for humans. There’s no way to protect humans from the radiation durin the 8 months in space and the limited time on mars.
Not necessarily. The trip is 1 Sievert, which is very high, but insulation and so on can limit some of it. Mars can be made liveable, but almost all of it will have to happen underground where there’s natural shielding. It actually helps as you can spray a polymer and seal the underground as well, and then there’s no an extreme load on o2 resources.
The real problem is drilling, which can be done robotically, and the martian terrain is so rugged that drilling into a cliff and airlocking it, while creating larger and larger passages for those to live is probably easiest.
They do need to find some electrodynamic clothes that will absorb or deflect radiation.

No way? I find it hard to believe that has not been studied and solved.
If Musk wants to blow his own personal money on a fantasy then let him. Not one dime of taxpayer’s money should be subsidized for this foolish fantasy period. It is just as inept as saying all cars will be electric by 2030. There is no way he can or will deliver this fantasy. It is just not going to happen. All cars will never be electric either... It is a fantasy project just to scam tax dollars.
“No way? I find it hard to believe that has not been studied and solved.”
Musk and his team solve problems as they go.
I’ve heard that a problem could be carrying enough food and supplies for such a trip. It’s at least 8 months to get to Mars, I believe? It could be longer, depending on the alignment of the planets when the trip is scheduled.
But anyway, 8 months to get there, 8 months back, and presumeably the astronauts would want to spend some time there after such a long trip. It could be close to a two year round trip.
The robot will likely measure exposure. Once they know what they’re up against they can figure insulation.
My goodness, struggle, sounds like you put a lot of thought into this. Very impressive!
“There is no way he can or will deliver this fantasy.”
Then it is incumbent on you to notify Musk and his engineers that you know more about space exploration than they do.
By the way, what are your qualifications to be such an expert?
“By the way, what are your qualifications to be such an expert?”
I am a realist, businessman, and master at spotting scams. This is just another highspeed rail project to scam for tax dollars. Like I say, if he wants to pay for it completely out of his own pocket fine. And no deductions for personal losses on a fantasy pipe dream.
#2 Here's my Space Suit.
#3 If Mark Watney can do it, so can I.
Doesen’t work that way. This site explains it pretty well.
“I am a realist, businessman, and master at spotting scams.”
That is totally convincing. Now, go forth and alert Trump.
Take some of the Hollyweird promise makers with you.
The most interesting premise is to use tug-spacecraft, like tugboats to send asteroids of ice to crash on Mars, seeding an atmosphere over time. People will live underground until they no longer have to.
Take me! I could be the senior test to see how the old farts do in space. Take me!
“It could be close to a two year round trip.”
Most likely.
That’s why you need to haul a lot. Starship system lift capacity when fully deployed is @400 tons a week into LEO. That’s a lot. A few months of prep will give them quite a lot of resources.
