US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has signed an agreement with the Department of Government Efficiency and the General Services Administration to work with the US Postal Service

In a letter DeJoy sent to Congress on Thursday, he said DOGE teams will “assist us in identifying and achieving further efficiencies,” saying the Elon Musk-led agency will focus on improving the management of USPS retirement assets and the Workers’ Compensation Program, as well as addressing the agency’s legislative mandates and regulatory requirements.

After several months they will conclude:
We have thoroughly examined the Postal Service and found it to be highly efficient, giving superior value for the prices of postage, with dedicated and hardworking well qualified staff who were obviously hired due to merit. The wonder is how private firms like UPS and FedEx have survived against that competition.

Then the voyage to the alternate universe will end and they will be back in ours.

The USPS is the butt of jokes, but I’m actually a big fan. The task they have is monumental and they do an incredible job overall. With 18 months of real leadership and some modest capital investment they can turn the USPS around, lower costs and prices, and run UPS and FedEx out of business.

Now you’re talking.

Update:
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is investing a total of $9.6 billion to modernize its delivery vehicle fleet, with the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) costing around $59,600 per unit, and electric variants costing $77,692. New ones delivered in 2023 and later.

He didn’t have any choice. He’s stepping down, but probably won’t be leaving until they get a replacement for him.

I agree. The postal service is older than the U.S. I hope they don’t end up completely screwing it up

UPS and FedEx don’t deliver to every address, every day, 6 days a week.

People don’t realize that First Class mail is protected by the 4th ammendment. UPS and FedEx are not.

The USPS is designed to be financially self-sufficient, meaning it should cover its costs through its own operations, not through appropriations from the federal government.

Despite being self-funded, the USPS has faced financial challenges in recent years, with revenues not covering expenses and debt for over 15 years.

In 2022, Congress passed legislation providing the USPS with about $50 billion in financial relief over a decade, requiring future retirees to enroll in Medicare and maintaining six-day a week mail deliveries.

The USPS has been able to continue operating by increasing its debt and unfunded liabilities.

While the USPS was initially funded by taxpayers, beginning in the 1970s, it largely transitioned to a “self-funded” model.

I expect their first conclusion is that they shouldn't be paying for their own regulatory body, 50 million a year wasted on the Postal Regulatory Commission which universally decides that everything should always be as it was in 1970, including postage rates, and USPS should magically make money appear out from it's rump. (The PRC wanted a 90 million dollar budget this year...)

Second conclusion would likely that USPS should set it's market dominate rates (read non-profit postage) based on costs. So when politicos demand all of their 503 C political action committee (non-profit postage) mail should be treated like first class mail with extensive logs for any of their crap mailing lists from people who donated during the Carter and Reagan years...

Paying 12 cents postage on those mailers is just simply insane for the demands. Triple that, at least, will almost alone make USPS profitable again. They'll also conclude that first class stamp rates are more than half as cheap as most other western nations, and raising first class to a dollar a stamp would not only pay for current operating costs, but provide money to improve 40 year old sorting machines.

What they won't find is random funding of studies on Trans stamp use or the other garbage that infects most federal agencies. They'll also find that the United States pays exorbitant rates for international postage - at least twice what it should, simply to fund other postal systems around the world so they can mail a couple kilos of package to the United States for a couple bucks (vs the $38 it'd cost to mail it back to them from the US.)

They'll likely recommend USPS cease to utilize the UPU and enter into their own agreements with postal systems around the world. That would save consumers in the United States tens of millions and drastically increase the ability of US based creators to ship around the world for at least half the cost of the current system (and more likely a quarter of the cost.)

At the moment, all international mail must go by passenger aircraft (hey, thanks UPU...) so if there isn't a flight from the US to that country, 9 times out of 10, there's no way to ship there. Expanding options to include cargo carriers like UPS, FedEx and DHL would also skip the arduous TSA inspection of all international mail, yet another cost (which honestly isn't covered by postal rates, the UPU sucks up all that cash...)

The addition of cargo carriers would also reduce the costs (and travel time) for shipments to US territories, Hawaii and Alaska, which I'm sure most of the non-continental US population would greatly appreciate.

At the end of the day, DOGE might finally break the gridlock USPS has been having with congress who doesn't want their political action committees to have to raise more funds to cover postage, can actually service far flung destinations better, and provide better international cargo.
