Ontario’s premier, the leader of Canada’s most populous province, is now charging 25% more for electricity shipped to 1.5 million American homes and businesses in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff plan.
Ontario's premier, the leader of Canada’s most populous province, announced that effective Monday it is charging 25% more for electricity to 1.5 million American homes and businesses in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war.
Ontario provides electricity to Minnesota, New York and Michigan.
I will not hesitate to increase this charge. If the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said at a news conference in Toronto.
"Believe me when I say I do not want to do this. I feel terrible for the American people who didn't start this trade war. It’s one person who is responsible, it’s President Trump.”
Ford said Ontario’s tariff would remain in place despite the one-month reprieve from Trump, noting a one-month pause means nothing but more uncertainty. Quebec is also considering taking similar measures with electricity exports to the U.S.
Minnesota says it will have a minimal impact.
Minnesota receives only a small share of its electricity from Ontario, but Democratic Gov. Tim Walz was sharply critical of Trump's actions that led to Monday’s announcement from Ford.
“The first victims of Trump’s Trade war? Minnesotans struggling to pay their skyrocketing electric bill,” Walz tweeted with a link to a story about Ontario’s move. “Minnesotans cannot afford Trump’s billionaire-run economy. We have to put a stop to this madness.”
But Minnesota Power, the main electrical utility serving the part of Minnesota that borders Ontario, gets only a “very small” proportion of its power from the province, company spokesperson Amy Rutledge said.

Proof that Canadians are money hungry opportunists that don’t believe in honoring contracts.
It’s all part of the process of negotiation.
Doug, you know what Canada has been benefiting from all this time re U.S. trade and defense. This is a form of election interference. You have entered the FA phase of FAFO, good luck.
Drill baby drill...Pennsylvania and the NY southern tier has all the gas we need. Up the use of gas and we can cut down on the electric.
“Minnesotans struggling to pay their skyrocketing electric bill”
Well, Timmy, you could let Minnesota companies build and provide power without having to buy from Canada.
But it does let us know who our friends are. Canada was happy with Chinese fentanyl crossing its border into the U.S.
May the Sikhs replace their truckers. It’s what they deserve.
Power can be diverted. Start building more small nuclear plants. This is what they are looking at for their AI processing power. The technology for todays plants dwarfs what was available 20/30 years ago.
New York has a fracing ban.
Good for them! It should be a 100 % tax increase.
Trump’s Trade War”
Trump does not have a “trade war”. More MSM BS.
Aware...but maybe NY has to wise up. Why import when we have capabilities here? Pretty stupid.

I’ve posted this same post several times in the past, so I apologize for repeating it.
I’ve watched this case for the last 15 years, and it is still SO relevant as to how leftist social-engineering and politics act contrary to common sense, so I can’t help myself
It was exactly 4 years ago when Leftist hero (and soon to be disgraced sex-pest) Andrew Cuomo, and environmental activist RFK Jr. finally shut down New York’s Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, under the pretext that the plant’s water outlet into the Hudson River hurt spawning of a particular species of fish located near to the outlet.
Indian Point at one point provided up to 40% of downstate NY and NY City’s baseload electricity.
It had been operating for nearly 60 years, without incident, and being fully depreciated - but still in good working order - produced 2 gigawatts of electricity at a cost of 3 cents per KWH (whereas NY City retail customers paid 30+ cents to the public utility)
What NY’ers were told at the time was that the lost power would be replaced with “green” renewable energy from solar and offshore - and also cheap/green power from Quebec, for which the high capacity transmission line is still being built.
So in fact what has really replaced the lost capacity is gas-fired electric generation, the cost of which is highly variable, produces CO2 - and which NY State will also not allow to be fracked within NY State borders.
The hypocrisy and stupidity with leftist politicians is just stunning.
Or just buy a modular nuclear reactor.
From my understanding, Canada provides a small percentage of electricity for the USA. This is virtue signaling.
Let the moron tax it...our demand will dry up and it’ll be provided by our own folks.
The thing about being the greatest is that you are always the victim of other's jealousy. Then when you fight back, people get angry.
It has been a few decades since I last imported electricity into the USA from Canada, but I do know that it was very heavily regulated.
For example the CER requires a license/permit to export power from Canada. https://www.cer-rec.gc.ca/en/applications-hearings/submit-applications-documents/oas/oas-exports-imports.html
Also, there are also WTO requirements on settling disputes involving international trade. https://maseconomics.com/dispute-settlement-in-international-trade-mechanisms-and-procedures/
China just recently brought legal action against the USA for the Trump imposition of a 10% tariff on imports from China. I would expect that the USA and the electric utilities getting Canadian power would immediately bring legal action before the WTO against their Canadian supplier.
The article is just a rehash of PR releases without any serious investigation.

Sound like Germany. Shutter the nuke plants. Start cutting down the forestry for wood Btu’s. That’s green new deal calculus.
Perhaps PDJT needs to remind the good people of NY.
