Jobs data starts to wobble ahead of February report
NBC News | Comcast ^ | March 7, 2025 | By Rob Wile and J.J. McCorvey

Policy uncertainty and blistering job cuts in Washington threaten to shake the U.S. economy off its moorings, traders and analysts say, with fresh employment data set to provide the latest picture of the effects so far.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release its monthly employment report for February at 8:30 a.m. ET Friday. Analysts expect to see roughly 170,000 new payrolls added last month, up from January’s 143,000 job gains. The unemployment rate is expected to have held steady at 4%, a historically low level.

Less than two full months into office, President Donald Trump’s new administration has whipped up storm clouds for the otherwise solid economy he inherited, promising to overhaul it to address voters’ widespread discontent.

In recent weeks, consumer confidence has taken a downturn as households shift more focus from spending toward saving. Meanwhile, the combination of Trump’s still-evolving tariff agenda and the massive job cuts sought by his billionaire adviser Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency initiative have raised the twin specters of higher unemployment and higher prices, with increasing invocations of stagflation.

Firing value destroying federal leeches can only be salutary.

Counting their sinecures as “Jobs” was always a lie.

Didn’t you hear??? During the Biden era there was ZERO unemployment. ZERO inflation. ZERO debt. Crime did not exist. Everyone had high paying jobs. President Trump destroyed the economy on Day One. /s

Back to the gaslight indeed. Hey everyone, you never had it so good as when Biden was in office.

The economy was booming. Look at the job numbers!!! Of course, as they were announcing great job numbers for month x, they were revising downward constantly for the month prior.

Oh, and inflation was non-existent. Non-existant. It only started existing two months ago.

The media learned nothing.

Of course, the slashing of wasteful government is gonna cause pain. I just did not realize this country was established for the people to work hard in order for a government to grow and burden the people with taxes and regulation.

Maybe I’m wrong .....

For tne entirety of the pedojoe administration, they over reported hirings only to adjust the prior month's numbers lower quietly every month.

I suspect they will try to underreport during Trump's administration and quietly adjust the prior month's numbers up every month.

What counts are the headlines. If Trump is smart he'll put an end to these shenanigans.

143k new jobs nationwide isn’t good economics.

170k is better, but not a strong economy. We need about 500K a month US CITIZEN JOBS to recover and grow.

The media gaslighting of the economy, and the governments playing with economic data, just confuses the average American.....until they got to go to buy something and they know something is wrong.

The government job losses hurt today but become new jobs later when they get a private sector job. One step back, two steps forward.

That’s for sure. They overshot the employment numbers by 20K and incorrectly said the unemployment rate was 4.0 when it’s 4.1. What the heck is wrong with them? Accuracy is a foreign concept to them clearly.

NBC assumes the numbers weren’t fudged during the Mob Boss Biden’s term. Bad assumption.

I have read several analysis. They can all be summed up:
we must either report good news or bad news ( good and bad flip depending on which side one is on).
If numbers are in the middle they have no story and that cannot be tolerated. They must have a story. They must report either good or bad news … seemingly regardless of the facts.
