President Donald Trump will exempt automakers from proposed tariffs on Mexico and Canada for one month after pleas from industry leaders.

“We are going to give a one month exemption on any autos coming through USMCA,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said during a press conference on Wednesday.

“Reciprocal tariffs will still go into effect on April, 2, but at the request of the companies associated with USMCA, the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they are not at an economic disadvantage,” she continued.

Trump has one ambition economically; lower the cost of every damn thing he can. If one thing doesn’t work then he’ll try another. He’s not an ideologue, he’s a manager and deal maker. I’d guess he’s ALWAYS got a plan to move forward.

You dont know why?

Because a whole lot of components are manufactured outside this country.

They used to make Fords 4 cylinder engines in Windsor ONTARIO. I dont know if they still do or not.

The only wheeled vehicle i know that is nearly exclusively made in the USA is Mack Trucks.
Used to be that even the gauges in Mack Trucks were made by Mack. I dont know if that is true yet or not but, their Engines and Drive trains are made in Hagerstown Maryland. They are assembled in Pennsylvania...if i remember right.

So..anyone who claims to want to buy American, and in the big truck business, Mack.

He’s given the auto makers time to start up production in America before the tariff hit. Imagine that, American cars made in America.

He’s trying to move as many operations to US as possible. This will give the automakers the chance to come up with plans to move all or some of operations that make sense. Otherwise, vehicle costs could go up by 3-7k per car.
If he gets more operation to move, he can remove the auto tariffs.

Yup. Smart. The goal here is to give American companies leverage over their competitors.

I am not a huge US manufacturer supporter because of quality.

But this is a good strategy.

I am learning on Free Republic that it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter that we are becoming a debtor 3rd world developing nation with very little industry to speak of. What is important is getting the lowest price for any good we buy. Even if it means we are reduced to the level of a Brazil.

You don’t get it. If they move production to the USA they dont PAY the tariff. We have to keep the tariff FOREVER.

Well maybe you should move to China.

The tariff money won’t be enough to fund the government. We know that doge will help reduce government spending but it will still be tough to get back a 2019 budget politically.
Increasing business activity in US by increasing manufacturing (which spurs service sectors etc) will increase tax revenues. It also insulates US economy from events and decisions made by other countries. Remember COVID when China had monopoly on PPE and pharmaceuticals. US was caught off guard.

Tariffs can’t replace the payroll tax (FICA). But they could make a huge difference in the income tax. Almost replace it.

I hope you saw the response to your post at 13.

central_va freepmailed me the following:

“How are you. Life has been tough for you Free Traitors lately, hasn’t it?”

to which I replied in part:

“Don’t make a quality product? Then I go elsewhere. Wiha insulated tools rated for 1000V are better at durability than Klein insulated tools. In that case the Germans win out. Which is disappointing as I have lots of other Klein tools.”

Several years ago, when I commented on a post that there were no good quality binoculars made in the US that included US manufactured glass and what was someone to do if they need a pair, he sent a link to binoculars on sale at Ebay made in the 1940s-50s.

In his mind, if there’s not good quality products made in the US, you need to buy them anyways and just deal with it.

A good poster who sometimes goes off the rails and at times threatens posters that don’t agree with him.
