Russia appears to have begun to deploy its troops on horseback in Ukraine, as reports emerge that President Vladimir Putin has nearly depleted his Soviet military stockpiles.
Newsweek has contacted the Russian government for comment by email.
Why It Matters
Reports that Russia's military is using horses in the war suggests that Putin is resorting to extreme measures due to equipment shortages caused by his full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in 2022. The conflict has resulted in the largest depletion of Russia's military equipment in 80 years, independent news outlet The Insider reported earlier this month.
What To Know
Videos circulating on Russian Telegram channels appear to show Russian soldiers mounted on horses. Newsweek has yet to verify the details.
"You've got a docile horse, an obedient one," one Russian soldier said to another in a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Anton Gerashchenko, a former adviser to Ukraine's minister of internal affairs. "You're a good rider."
The other soldier complained: "These horses are so slow!"

Zeepers are so desperate now they will pin their hopes on anything. They really believed in 2022 that the Russian troops only had shovels. Pathetic.
Too bad the Ukrainian parasites lost the war, Zeeper neocon losers. It must really suck to be a gang of bloodthirsty schmucks.
Cossacks!
No, I don’t believe the Russians are using horses because they are depleted.
But let’s look at it from the Ukie side for a moment. If the propaganda was true, it means Ukraine has been defeated by a military reduced to using horses while Ukraine’s backers sent armored vehicles etc.
> Even today, a pack mule is an infantryman’s best friend. <
That’s a fair point. On the other hand, during WW2 the Americans and the British relied on trucks. And thanks to American aid, the Soviets also relied on trucks.
Meanwhile, the Germans relied mostly on horses.
And we all know how that little spat turned out.
aka "Das Bruggie"...
I hate to see horses get killed.
USA used horses in Afghan war. I guess by your measure we are POS as well.
I feel for the horses. I think there is some Czar symbolism behind it as well.

OMG the Kazakhs are back;-)
Looked to me like they were just out for a joy ride and having a good time. Those weren’t horse tracks on that road, they were large vehicle tracks.
“3rd world “
Yeah, but then you’ll go on another thread and tell us Russia is the greatest menace to Europe of all time, and if we don’t fight them now, they’ll be on the English Channel and the Pyrenees before we know it.

During WW II, the US and British used mules and horses in the China, India Burma theater of war and also in Italy.
I agree but horses have died in battle for centuries.
An estimated 1.5 million horses and mules died during the American Civil War. This includes horses that were killed, wounded, or died from disease.
“And we all know how that little spat turned out.”
Most remember blitzkrieg and the panzers, but a huge portion of the Wehrmacht transport was horse drawn. We used pack mules in Italy and the Aussies used them on the Kokoda Trail. During WWII the Red Army fielded a huge cavalry force and Germany, Italy, Finland, and Romania used cavalry in Russia. Very useful where road bound forces have trouble.
You’re right.
Zeepers are going to be pissed at Donald Trump when he works out a peace deal in Ukraine.
You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier.
What are the odds that the story is entirely incorrect and there are no horses?
