Good heads-up and alert flying by the Southwest pilot.
A colleague was killed in the 1991 collision at LAX:
On February 1, 1991, at Los Angeles International Airport, USAir Flight 1493 (Boeing 737-300) and SkyWest Airlines Flight 5569 (Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner turboprop) collided when the USAir jet landed on top of the smaller SkyWest plane. The SkyWest plane had been cleared to taxi into position on the same runway for takeoff. The Boeing 737 landed on top of the Metroliner, crushing it beneath its fuselage. The larger jet then skidded down the runway, caught fire, and crashed into an abandoned fire station. All 12 people aboard the SkyWest plane died and 23 of the 89 occupants of the USAir flight died, primarily due to the ensuing fire and smoke inhalation. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the primary cause was a loss of situational awareness by the air traffic controller, exacerbated by inadequate procedures and oversight at the LAX control tower.
Great job by the Southwest pilot!
Wow.
Airlines Offering $100 Upgrade Where You’re Guaranteed An Old Male Pilot Named Steve
Touch and go. Must have been a former military pilot. They are experts on that kind of thing.
LOL...Southwest upgrade to get and old-school pilot! Hilarious. I like the extra upgrade option to get “flight attendants who are straight, thin, perky blonde ladies with a slight southern accent and names like Pam or Darla.”
Didn’t Earn It ATCs.
A second earlier and the wing spoilers would have been up and the thrust reversers deployed — and no go-around opportunity.
Gock-Da!!
I was coming into DWF years ago at night on an AA 757 and We were probably 50’ AGL when suddenly it was FULL THROTTLE, NOSE AND GEAR UP !!!
As We were banking left at several hundred feet the Capitan came on the PA and calmly apologized saying that there was another aircraft on Our runway. He had the same tone of voice as the Greeting He gave Us at the beginning of flight...
Medals for both pilots on that plane.
That happened to me landing in Pisa, Italy around 1977. There was a huge fog bank and we were gliding along on top of it during the final approach. I could see smokestacks sticking up through the fog off to the starboard side but I couldn’t see the ground. That was rather nerve wracking.
We finally descended through the fog layer and, as came out from the bottom of the fog, we saw the runway was 100 meters off to our right! All of us on the right side of the aircraft needed new underwear.
Throttles forward and we went around. Instead of diverting to a different airport, the pilot thought “Let’s try this again...I think I can find the runway this time.” I tell you, that second landing attempt was the most white-knuckle experience I ever had on a flight.
Fortunately, this time he found the runway and we landed ok.
You're probably right. It's more likely the co-pilot saw the problem first.

Near collusion on Runway at Midway Airport Chicago

My wife rides shotgun when we are in the p/u.
She is much better at seeing our deer friends lurking on the shoulders.
That can be as much of a distraction as it is of benefit.
Works both ways. At least with my wife it seems that way.
I stand corrected!!
Wrong.
Thanks for that link. Pilot error for the little jet. DEI pilot?
