Senate Republicans on Monday criticized Elon Musk’s directive for federal government employees to lose their jobs if they did not send in a bullet-pointed summary of what they did last week at work, describing it as a rash decision that was not handled well.
The email asking what they accomplished over the past week had set a deadline of Monday at midnight for responses. However, that was walked back by the Office of Personnel Management when it told departments and agencies that they could ignore that email.
Nevertheless, some Senate GOP members took issue with Musk’s request as he continues his push to cut the ranks of federal workers.
“I don’t think it was handled very well in terms of the surprise element of it or what the point of it was,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.). “That, I think, was confusing because I think there were a couple different explanations.”
“I think a little clarification on the voluntary part is probably good,” she added, pointing to OPM telling agencies that responses were optional.

That is exactly what this was.
One of the inevitable mistakes that the DOGE program will make. Some of these cannot be prevented.
What matters is how quickly they can recover from it. It is a recoverable mistake, IMO.
The basic idea is sound. A bunch of people who do not respond to a very simple contact request should be terminated. Let's see how they continue with this.
My expectation is that if this is handled correctly, they will find instances of "ghost employees" that fully justifies the measure.
He must be doing something right if these lovers are upstairs with him!
He must be doing something right if these losers are upset with him!
Capito is plural? Republicans? How big is she?
They’re looking for ghost employees who don’t actually exist but their paychecks go to the teachers union mobsters.
This situation reminds me of the movie “OFFICE SPACE”.
“The basic idea is sound. A bunch of people who do not respond to a very simple contact request should be terminated.”
The problem is a lot of department heads were telling employees to ignore it. Interfearing with the work of DOGE should be an impeachable offense.
The usual Rino$
All the major players told their teams to ignore the directive. I think RFK is the only one who had his personnel do it.
I thought that my opinion of Senate Republicans could not get any lower it it just went down some more.
That would be priceless!
We just got them through the senate. Trump is not going to impeach Kash, Pete, tulsi, rubio and the others over this. Next time, Musk will use the chain of command and send it that way. It’s a good lesson for Elon.
what the point of it was,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.). “
What the point of it was? This happens all the time in the private sector. This woman is a Senator?
All of the fraud and abuse happened on the RINO’s watch and they did nothing to stop it - and likely profited from it - so they can STFU.
This is why GOPE you don’t talk to the Alt Left Dinasour Media. Everything you say gets twisted to fit their narrative no matter what you say.
Grow up finally. These people in the failed media have NEVER been interested in what you think, only in how they can use it against you politically
IIRC, Musk said the point of it was to see how much fraud and how many ‘ghosts’ are on the payroll.
It sucks that they backed down.
Stay in your lane Senate.
Federal employees, other than judges and certain appointed executives cannot be impeached, and impeachment is a political process in any event. It means whatever the antagonists want it to mean as long as they can get enough votes.
"Grounds for termination" is the idea you want to use. These are usually well-defined activities that are prohibited by contract or tacit understandings between the employer and the employer.
Like, "you gotta do what the boss wants or you gotta be gone".
And there are conditions where employment is "at will" and either party can end it without giving any reasons. That condition applies to a great many Federal employees, but not all of them.
Then there is the condition where an entire organization is being dissolved. Terminations apply to everybody in that situation.
Legalistic arguments about "due process" and "correct procedures" will not save Federal employees from dismissal. Neither will orders from Judges. It is time for a lot of people to move on. The ones who leave early and quietly will do better than the ones who leave later after making a lot of noise.
It sucks, but the rest of us in the commercial economy have had to live with such things for decades. There is life after layoffs.
“Send the e-mail to all Congress critters.”
Chuck Schumer’s five bullet points:
* I called Musk a Nazi
* I called Trump a Nazi
* I wondered if I was being too easy on them
* So I called Musk a trans phobe
* And I called Trump a racist Nazi
