Panic in Germany with far-Right party on brink of huge election breakthrough
Express Newspapers ^ | Thursday, February 20, 2025 | Zak Garner-Purkis

Pushing dyed blonde hair from her dark eyes, Nicole Kursch squints at her phone. Braced against the freezing Saxon cold, she taps the envelope logo on her screen to open the encrypted messaging app Telegram.

Nicole, 26, scrolls through the many direct conversations and semi-private group chats to get information about the upcoming German election.

Often she is scared by what she sees: videos of terrorist attacks, buildings exploding with fireworks and warnings about women’s safety. All, in her eyes, are bound together by one overriding threat: immigration.

“People are talking a lot about migration in the Telegram groups I’m a part of,” the young woman tells me. “They send around videos whenever there are attacks by migrants.”

Just days before we meet Nicole sipping coffee in Pirna, East Germany, a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker in a Mini Cooper injured 30 people by driving into a crowd in Munich.

The incident sparked memories of two horrifying summer attacks allegedly carried out by migrants, which saw four people die, including a policeman, and the murders of five women and a nine-year-old boy at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg on December 20 in a horrifying attack that left 200 people injured when a Saudi man drove a car through the packed marketplace.

All of it has hardened Nicole’s resolve to vote for hard-right party Alternative für Deutschland on Sunday when she steps into the polling booth, a party whose hardline policies she knows from videos on her TikTok and Instagram social media feeds.

A highly controversial organisation with a regional leader who can legally be described as ‘fascist’ and groups on extremist watch lists, the AfD almost certainly won’t be in government because none of Germany’s mainstream parties will form a coalition with them.

It doesn’t sound like the voters are panicked.

What’s up?

I hope AFD wins but there are so many stupid leftist crazy women there. We need a conservative result in a major European country. It keeps eluding us.

When you have tried something repeatedly and it does not work for you the logical thing is to try something else.

Perhaps the group currently in power should have invested a bit of thought into making things actually work for their own citizens.

I don't understand the "well where else are they going to go?" mindset. If a system is failing badly enough and an alternative does not already exist, one will be created.

Funny. I’ve heard Trump called a “radical centrist.”

If no party will form a coalition with afd then they cannot form a government because they are not going to win an outright majority. They will probably win more votes than any other single party but it will be less than 50% and they will ask the other parties to join with them in a coalition.

All will refuse.

Which will put control back into the hands of those responsible for the current disaster.

What I wonder is how has any sense of self-preservation at all lost to so many people? If they are bent on suicide they can go it alone in private. Leave me out of all their apparent self-loathing and stupidity.

People will stomp the life out of you so long as you allow it. Count on that. It is one of my absolute truths.

Unlikely.

In the UK, you have London. Or Paris in France.

Imagine if NYC and LA were bigger cities. Kamala Harris would be President right now.

Indeed, the problem is staring them in the face, stabbing, raping and robbing them. But they are so afraid of the consequences of speaking out, or they have been driven to hate themselves so much, that they just accept it. You can't convince me they don't see it.

The AfD is not “far Right”. They’re pretty moderate Right actually. Their leader is a lesbian woman married to a foreign woman.

The National SOCIALISTS were not far Right either. They were Far Left. Yes Martha, Socialists are on the Left. And yes, they really were Socialists. No, fighting commies because they were competing for the same political niche does not make them opposites.

Good point. I hope that urban advantage will be overcome but have to admit pessimism is fitting here.

Canada has probably the best shot with Pierre leading in the polls.

Before 1/20/2025, I agree with you.

But with Trump's trolling attacks on Trudeau, the Liberals may be able to win another election. Trump should have ignored Trudeau. Wait until the election is over. Then he can negotiate with Pierre.

But I may be wrong. However, it appears to me that Canadians do not appreciate getting picked on by the U.S. So the Liberals will be able to redirect the discussion on the economic troubles of Trudeau Administration and blame it all on Trump.
