Canada seeks stronger EU trade ties in face of Trump tariffs

Canada wants to deepen its economic ties with the EU and uphold global trading rules in the face of threatened U.S. tariffs, its trade minister Mary Ng told Reuters on Saturday. The EU and Canada have benefited from a free trade agreement since 2017, which has boosted bilateral trade by 65%, and set up a raw materials partnership in 2021. Ng met EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic for a lunch on Saturday following a meeting with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director general of the World Trade Organization in Geneva on Friday.

"Trade agreements are one thing, and we have seen really great numbers, but what more can we be doing to help Canadian businesses enter into any of the 27 member states...and what more can we do to the same in Canada" Ng said. She said critical minerals and smaller businesses would be among the focus areas with the EU. The EU, in particular, is keen to forge partnerships to secure metals that are key for the energy transition - cobalt, lithium and nickel - to reduce its dependence on China.

Canada is also pushing to diversify its exports and set itself a target in 2018 of increasing non-U.S. exports by 50% by 2025. Ng said the country was on track to meet or exceed the target. Canada struck trade deals with Indonesia in December and Ecuador last week and is pushing hard in the Indo-Pacific region. The minister is leading a delegation including more than 200 businesses to Australia, Singapore and Brunei next week.

I think it would be easier to annex western Canada than the east.

The few remaining sane European people will need new homes far away from where they are if they want to keep their daughters safe.

I agree that western Canada is preferential to the rest of Canada. The last thing we want is the headache of Quebec and the liberals in blue Ontario always whining about we folks in the lower 48.Alberta, on the other hand. is their most productive province, their version of Texas and the folks there actually like Americans. I would gladly annex them as North Texas

Do you think the invaders in Toronto will get long with the invaders in Europe, or will it be sectarian violence?

Well, because of the Degeneracy of the populations, there's an excellent market for Nazi uniforms, equipment, arms, propaganda and espionage in both Canuckistan and the Ewwww, ... it sounds like it might work.

Montreal has always driven Canada towards the EU. Buy Airbus, not Boeing. Western Canadians would love to be out from under the French tyranny. They are forced to sell oil at under market value to Quebec and Ontario. Make each province a new state.

What tariffs on Canada? Trump threatened tariffs unless Trudy did more to stop the flow of illegals and drugs from Canada to the US and after puffing up and acting all tuff, little Trudy folded like a cheap suit. After that Trump put a hold on his threatened tariffs as long as Canada upheld their part. So no tariffs, at least new ones have beennput on Canuckistan.

Unfortunately all of the consumers in the EU will be spending all of their money on heat and electric.

Bluntly, there is no way that Canada can win a trade war with the USA. 75% of their exports head to the USA. They can’t easily switch those.

And, while they can (and ARE) putting tariffs on American goods, that is a fraction of American trade.

This will disproportionately hit American poultry farmers, cattle etc. but I don’t think it is a death blow

https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/news/2025/02/list-of-products-from-the-united-states-subject-to-25-per-cent-tariffs-effective-february-4-2025.html

The oil they export is tar and is not economical to shift anywhere else.

And the EU is not going to let Canadian farmers win over the EU farmers
