I just watched a new episode of a history channel program titled “Hunting History with Steven Rinella.” The episode was about the missing plane carrying Alaska politicians Hale Boggs and Nick Begich in 1972. I remember when that happened, but hadn’t recalled that they were never found. Rinella reported there are still 40 missing planes in Alaska.

I wish them luck. Alaska has a lot of places a crash can go undiscovered for years.

Silly question because I dont have a clue.
Can’t there be homing devices put in black boxes on planes?
I know this small one maybe doesn’t have something like that.
But there was a huge plane that disappeared some time back and couldn’t be found.
Seems shocking with our technology now

Hopefully they find them. Pretty cold up here right now and looking at the weather up there it’s showing single digits now and for the near future. I had a fellow pilot for the company that I fly for that flew from Anchorage to Valdez for the annual airshow. Turned up missing. Huge search party looking for him with a lot of airplanes that were attending the airshow. Never found his crash but found three crashes that previously whenever found… It’s a big place.

The aircraft likely had an emergency locator transmitter or ELT. Upon impact they are designed to transmit a signal that SAR can home in on.
Problem is, they don't always work.

"No emergency-transmission signal determined to be from the plane was heard during the search. In its report on the incident, the National Transportation Safety Board stated that the pilot's portable emergency transmitter, permissible in lieu of a fixed transmitter on the plane, was found in an aircraft at Fairbanks. The report also notes that a witness saw an unidentified object in the pilot's briefcase that resembled, except for color, the portable emergency transmitter. The safety board concluded that neither the pilot nor aircraft had an emergency location transmitter"

I understand Hillary has been running her mouth lately about how plane crashes are all Trump’s fault.

Thanks for the correction. I was wondering what he was doing on a plane in Alaska, so I checked, and found out that he and Begich were on a fund raising trip.

Supposedly plane crashes come in threes.
Hopefully this is the last for a while.

And if the "impact" isn't great enough to set it off, you have to know where it is so you can turn it on or have a switch on the instrument panel. As far as I know the FAA doesn't require said switch. At least this article:
Flying Magazine
Everything You Need to Know about Emergency Locator Transmitters
Doesn't say anything about any such switch on the instrument panel.

Yeah they could but there are a lot of low valleys where any signal would be hard to get.

On average, over 6 people a day disappear in Alaska. The Alaska Triangle is the Chuck Norris of spooky triangles.
