Pro-Trump firebrands eye governor’s mansions

A number of President Trump’s most vocal and controversial allies are considering runs for governor in 2026, opening the door to the president having more influence in state capitals across the country.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) has been laying the groundwork for a run in Florida, while former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) also said he has started to think about a run in the state. Vivek Ramaswamy has said he will launch a bid in Ohio, while Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) said this week she is “seriously considering” a run for governor in her state. And Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) is publicly mulling a run for Arizona’s top office, filing a statement of interest earlier this week.

The slate of divisive Trump loyalists could reshape the country’s image of state executives, who have had some of the most positive approval ratings of any politicians in the country and generally have been seen as sober counterweights to whichever administration is in power.

“This started a couple of cycles ago and judging by the success Donald Trump had in 2024, I would anticipate more and more candidates who share his commitment to certain policy ideas,” said Jesse Hunt, a Republican strategist and former communications director at the Republican Governors Association.

“Candidates will stylistically be closer to the newer brand of Republican maybe than your more traditional reserve brand of Republican,” he added.

Sources confirmed to The Hill last week that Ramaswamy is planning a run. He would join Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost (R) in a GOP primary.

Be nice to see Donalds and Gaetz work something out and the other run for the Senate.

Are there any liberal “firebrands” out there?

Just wondering.

I like all of those listed to varying degrees.

Most are solid.

Mace the most surprising one: I liked her originally but she went off the reservation then back on it!

Some cynics would say it gets her out of Congress if she ran for governor 😂

Mace is a fatal attraction. She loves drama. She loves media attention. Her claim to be a rape survivor is suspicious. She is not governor material. I would rather vote for Alex Murdaugh for governor than her.

Vivek Ramaswamy has said he will launch a bid in Ohio

I am an Ohio native, life long.

I am impressed with Vivek but after Trump dumped for his comments concerning H-1B visas he may have trouble with a few Conservatives.

Biggs in Arizona...🥳 Yes... we definitely can not have Hobbs a day longer than her current term. A re-call would even be better.

My state representative Brad Sherman is running for governor of Iowa in 2026. He is friend of Trump and worked for his campaign in our state, so he expects to have Trump’s endorsement. Our governor Reynolds openly supported DeSantis during the primaries.

What about California? Do we have anyone who could stand up to the Fienstine-Pelosi CABAL that calls all the shots today? Mel Gibson? Who?

Nancy Mace first blamed Trump for the events of January 6th. She is also weak on abortion, criticizing Florida's ban on abortions past six weeks. She is in the mold of the Palmetto State's weak Republicans like Graham and Scott.

Yes. Mace would do or say anything to get on TV. She faked a hate crime a la Jussie during her first campaign. I’ve met her ex staff. She is a fatal attraction. But your point about the weakness of SC Republicans is well taken. There is a upper class strain in SC who crave establishment acceptance.

Biggs made it official at the AZGOP meeting yesterday. Very winnable. Trump endorsed Karrin Taylor Robson. It was before Biggs officially joined the race though. Don’t know who is making those decisions for Trump. Robson is definitely RINO.
