Thanks for the cheery news..

Actually, I’m hoping that with a change in the direction of the US more people will feel positive about the future and birth rates will increase.

It's what the Left wanted.
They always whined about overpopulation.
Here is the result of their policies. They backfire every time.

Not to worry. Third-worlders will make up for it.

You have to bring back a love of children before the population can return to be growing.

I think Nigeria’s growth in population alone can make up for this.

Beware of population determinists.

Too often these threats are paraded to manipulate the electorate to accept waves of immigrants who are in no way vetted and who on the whole present a drag to the economy rather than an asset. Indeed, waves of the unwashed inserted into our culture to temporarily prop up Social Security numbers are akin to a Ponzi scheme on steroids.

None of this takes into account the impact of technology on the need for workers. At the turn of the last century about 9/10 Americans worked on the farm. Today that is less that 1/10 yet we produce bountiful harvests that require government warehouses because they are in surplus.

When the agricultural Revolution merged into the Industrial Revolution the impact on demographics was profound and that has lasted until today. No one can foresee the impact the digital revolution will have before it is completed and if one adds the artificial intelligence revolution as compounding the digital revolution, potential impact on our workforce is potentially revolutionary in scope and potentially revolutionary and threatening.

If the digital revolution and AI combine to create an economy in which robots produce goods and services in abundant quantities with few hands-on workers a demographic of unemployed, unemployable, unwashed immigrants and even uneducated Americans, will be a liability rather than an asset. The wealth created under the new regime will have to be distributed to these people must be fed and housed and given bread and circuses and it will be difficult to conceive an economic system of distribution that is not socialist in character and preserves our fundamental conservative constitutional values, especially the Bill of Rights.

We should be celebrating the shrinking of our population and enjoying the freedom of the roads and the cleanliness of the air and water it permits. More important, we should thank God that the press of population will not further diminish our freedoms.

Africa has over a billion people. The productivity is rock bottom. The population continues to grow in spite of the grinding poverty there.

Population grows inversely to the odds of children surviving to adulthood. Because mortality is so high in Africa, they have lots of children to ensure at least a few make it to adulthood. When nearly every child is able to make it, they won’t have as many.

...No one can foresee the impact the digital revolution...

Robots don't need air. They have been very successful in exploring our Solar system. They will eventually be even more successful in the production of goods off planet. Automation will usher in an abundance of production that will dwarf the Industrial Revolution.

I don’t think this is a problem of positivity. Young people have been told for too long that they have to focus on their careers, go to college. They’re not prioritizing children early, and many couples, my wife and I included, wait too long to have babies.

There’s the problem of women fearing child rearing. Women are being told their basic biological urges are wrong and they should focus on their careers. That they shouldn’t let men outpace them. Break that glass ceiling, etc. When they actually have a child at 35, they realized, “Holy crap, I’ve missed out on something important.” Media, education, and society have taken something that is uniquely feminine in childbirth and turned it into a burden to be avoided.

There’s the problem of a court system that turns men into piggy banks for terrible women. Men have lost in the social lottery. Used to be we found a good woman, got married, had a family, worked 40 hours a week at the same company for 30 years, retired with a pension. Now you get a woman knocked up at 25, she learns to hate you, you both work yourselves raw, the child is raised by daycares and public schools, the women find another man, say they have “irreconcilable differences,” file for divorce, the courts find heavily in favor for the woman, and the man spends the rest of his life paying the woman. Men have no protections and thus no incentive to settle down. It usually ends in a messy divorce.

And finally... God is absent society. I see some hope coming back, but without Christ, without a true social cohesion around faith, there’s no guidance to live a virtuous life.

That last point is ALWAYS absent these discussions, but it is far and away the most important. Global society is lost until we turn back to our faith, and I fear that’s the hardest hurdle to overcome.

The inverse relationship between education and birth rates has been known for a LONG time.
Good luck bringing back the days of “Barefoot and pregnant”!
Educated first world has a low birth rate, and savages a high one.
Unless the educated world wants to import savages to destroy themselves they have to adapt to the lower birth rate they have adopted for themselves.

I believe, low the birth rates are do to perceptions of financial poverty of the young, and the reality of the financial gaps between the rich and the poor. Combined with the destruction of the family unit.

Young people feel too financially unstable to have kids, and are geared to try to work to get by. Only when they quit, or meet some stability, do they wish to pursue kids.
