Germany is giving its armed forces the ability to shoot down unidentified drones suspected of spying on military bases, industrial facilities and other critical infrastructure, according to people familiar with the matter.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s cabinet is expected to pass a draft amendment to the Aviation Security Act on Wednesday. That will enable the military to use force against unmanned aerial vehicles in order to prevent a serious accident or attack, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as the plan is not yet public. Authorities previously relied on jamming transmitters to disable drones, but certain recent models appeared to be resistant to the technology.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, both senior members of Scholz’s centre-left Social Democrats, agreed on the measures after drones were spotted in restricted airspace near energy, telecommunications, transport and industrial factories across the country in recent weeks, the people said.
According to the people, the drones are likely being deployed by a state actor for purposes of sabotage and potentially terrorism.

A growing number of suspicious drones have been sighted near army barracks in recent weeks, including the United States airbase in Ramstein. Several drones were seen flying over its runway at speeds of over 200 kilometres per hour.
German authorities assume that these were military drones...

A significant number of suspicious drones have also been spotted around critical infrastructure in European countries including Sweden, the U.K. and the Baltic states in previous months. There has not been any clear explanation for these incidents, a person familiar with the matter said, asking to speak on the condition of anonymity.

Unidentified Drone Ping
They should instead try to capture one whole. Like with a net.............
This could be the greatest benefit from the “Russia Russia Russia” scare.
Well hope they do
Let’s put them on public display
And noting (likely) country of origin
The inspiration for the Soviet ZSU-23-4.
I just hope we get E.T. for the Atari 2600 again
I never got a chance to play it the first time - fortunately
We had it. It sucked...................
bump for later
It’s surprising that Germany’s advanced anti-drone technology has proven ineffective in neutralizing unauthorized drones over restricted airspace, especially given the country’s reputation for technological excellence.
That is the game that killed the Atari 2600................
“Catch me if you can”
If these “drones” are as sophisticated as they seem, shooting them down may be a tall order.
I have been listening to various podcasts discussing these issues.
State of the art military drones would not want to jammed or hacked so they probably have internal programming telling them what their mission is and how to accomplish it without external communication of any kind.
Any anti-drone technology that did not use brute force would fail in that case.
That is why “shooting them down” directly is the best approach.
like a skynet? maybe a Sky hook program would do the trick. 12 satellites placed around the planet for observational pur... oh wait! that could result in earth vs the flying saucers. never mind.
Just fly over them and drop a net on them.
Lol.
I was feeling woozy after watching it on YT - j/k
IIRC, we paid the full sum of around $50 bucks for that trash....................
I didn’t like the movie - and I still hate Reese’s Pieces
Maybe in ice cream - a little bit
It is blasphemy to call them “Reese’s”
If elected, I promise to get rid of Reese’s Pieces
And Miracle Whip. I just want plain mayo. Maybe the one with mustard. Or ranch.
