California Convenes Special Session to Counter Trump Policies
The Epoch Times ^ | December 10, 2025 | Travis Gillmore

California state lawmakers convened a special session on Dec. 2 to prepare for the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump, with the goal of countering potential federal policy decisions related to environmental protections, abortion, and illegal immigrants, among others.

Gov. Gavin Newsom requested in early November that the session take place with a proclamation asking lawmakers to provide the resources needed for “litigation preparation.”

“We’re preparing for Trump 2.0, and his rhetoric has only heightened,” Newsom told The Epoch Times, saying that Trump had called for retribution and revenge, “and it requires us to be diligent.”

He said the first Trump term taught the state how to respond to perceived transgressions from the federal government.

“No one’s naive,” Newsom said. “We can’t roll over and let the progress of the last half-century evaporate.”

While urging preparations for prospective legal battles, the governor said he would prefer a collaborative relationship.

“Hopefully we won’t need any of the resources the Legislature will provide us,” Newsom said.

In the only legislation announced so far, state Sen. Scott Wiener—chair of the Senate budget committee—introduced Senate Bill X1-1 to allocate $25 million for the California Department of Justice, $10 million for county and city attorneys, and $25 million to cover local communities’ legal costs.

Grants awarded to county counsels and city attorneys could be used only for issues related to environmental protection, abortion access, and civil rights for immigrants and the LGBT community, according to the bill.

If passed and signed into law—which the governor estimates will occur before Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20—funding will also support nonprofit legal teams offering pro bono services, among other things.

What progress of the last half-century?

California is in a decline, has been for decades, and the slope down is getting steeper.

Hopefully this will be the permanent end of woke in particular and communistic policies in general.

This article is from December, but still relevant.

They convened the special session last week to authorize $50 million or so in additional spending for illegal aliens. The optics of convening a special session while Los Angeles burned for the sole purpose of giving money to illegal aliens looked kind of bad, so they temporarily recessed the session to add $2.5 billion in additional funding for fire response and recovery efforts.

I have no idea where they are planning on getting the money. A rational state would have spent the $7.5 billion in bonds, which the voters approved back in 2014 to build dams and water reservoirs, to actually build dams and water reservoirs. Over 10 years later, not a new single dam or reservoir has been built (though several dams were torn down to provide more water for fish).
