Oil and gas companies will be forced to face a suit seeking damages over Honolulu's claims they downplay their products' contribution climate change.
The Supreme Court turned down an appeal from fossil fuel giants on Monday, rejecting an attempt to skirt a climate change lawsuit seeking to hold companies liable over claims of deceptive marketing about the effect of greenhouse gases.
Companies such as Sunoco, Exxon Mobil, Chevron and BP said they are facing dozens of lawsuits, leaving a vital industry at risk of owing billions of dollars over accusations it causes climate change.

This is totally nuts. I’d like to see our SCOTUS justices witness a day in the life of oilfield workers on a drilling rig.
“The 7-1 ruling”
So there one goes.
The Supreme Court certainly is not.
Americans don’t stand a chance in this third world banana’s Feral courts anymore. All of our “courts” need to be shut down. We don’t arrest criminals anymore. Why the hell do we need “judges” shyster lawyers and their big banana, third world courtrooms.
In 2017, Honolulu filed a lawsuit against Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Sunoco and others, saying the companies misled consumers about fossil fuels’ impact on climate change. The city claims their behavior led to increased fossil fuel consumption and exacerbated the local impacts of climate change in Hawaii.
Honolulu cites state laws in its complaint, but the fossil fuel companies wanted the case moved to federal court. Three courts — a district court, the Ninth Circuit and the Supreme Court — had already shot down the companies’ first attempt to move the case to federal court.
Once the case was kicked back to state court, the companies tried to get lawsuit dismissed. Exxon and others argue that state courts do not have jurisdiction to hear the dispute because the case involves the impact of interstate and international climate change.
Why don’t they sue Rosneft, Lukoil, and Gazprom?
Thus, even if Honolulu loses, their administrators can say they scored a win by financially draining the oil companies. Will the citizens of Honolulu agree with their taxes paying the legal tab for Honolulu to engage in lawfare? Or do the citizens believe it's no problem?
Easy - stop doing business in Hawaii.
They don’t want the oil - they don’t get the oil.
Cut Hawaii loose, and restore the Monarchy.
Does the continued use of the term ‘fossil fuel’ not irk you? Been proven a long time ago that oil doesn’t come from dead dinosaurs.
Bkmk
Climate change cannot be proven to be caused by man, so the entire basis for the lawsuit is flawed.
The Supremes just passed the buck on this one. It should be thrown out on its merits.
“Easy - stop doing business in Hawaii.
They don’t want the oil - they don’t get the oil.”
I’d say about three months of 100 percent renewable energy will take care of the problem. No ship or airplane will go there without the ability to refuel. The government of Hawaii will go into hiding.
STOP SUPPLYING FOSSIL FUELS TO HAWAII...
ONE MONTH should make a serious dent.
Yes, it is under my skin much like: “we are a democracy”, “hate crimes”, “feeling triggered”, and “trans person”...
The legal argument the oil companies should use is that the Hawaiian government was and is complicit in causing climate change because they built the roads, airports, tourist industry, cruise line ports, etc; etc
The case is preposterous under a real legal system, but the complainants are following the model used against the tobacco companies, so even though the gov is the biggest profiteer off tobacco sales, that didn’t helps the companies. Same in this case. There’s no defense in Alice’s wonderland.
Walk into court and agree, then announce that no petroleum products will be sold in that market again. Let the politicians face an electorate with no gas, oil, and natural gas. Run ads in the market to remind folks who is responsible.
