A new survey found that a majority of Greenland respondents support joining the United States.

According to a poll by Patriot Polling released Sunday, 57.3 percent of respondents approve of Greenland becoming part of the U.S. Just 37.4 percent disapproved of the potential acquisition and 5.3 percent are undecided about the move.

Would they become an Unincorporated Territory like Puerto Rico, a 51st State? I haven't read the details of what Trump is proposing.

99.9% sure it would be a territory, just nowhere near the population to be a state. Lots of advantages to being a territory even without Congressional representation.

Once they are US citizens they can emigrate to a garden spot, like Minnesota.

I’d imagine the only thing he really cares about is having enough control over military security of the area and access to rare mineral caches so that they don’t get controlled by our enemies. Whatever route he goes with Greenland, he’ll be looking for the best deal with some bright red lines to protect our safety. He takes a long vision and he knows he has 2 good years to set some new directions in motion.

In addition to a fair price, offer Denmark a 50-year lease for the bottom 16,577 sq mi. of Greenland. They’ll double the area of their homeland and have all the ice they’ll ever need

Why wouldn’t they?

Only 57,000 population. Won’t be a state.

Denmark has nothing to do with it.

I asked Grok2...

Besides the 50 United States, what are the alternate political entities that are associated with the U.S.?

Besides the 50 states, several alternate political entities are associated with the United States:

Territories:
The U.S. maintains jurisdiction over several territories, which are not part of any state. These include:

Puerto Rico - Often referred to as a commonwealth, it has a unique status with significant internal self-governance but is under U.S. sovereignty.

Guam - An organized, unincorporated territory in the Pacific Ocean.

U.S. Virgin Islands - An organized, unincorporated territory in the Caribbean.

American Samoa - An unorganized, unincorporated territory in the South Pacific.

Northern Mariana Islands - An organized, unincorporated commonwealth in political union with the U.S.

Minor Outlying Islands - Various uninhabited islands scattered across the Pacific and Caribbean.

Freely Associated States:
These are sovereign nations in free association with the U.S., meaning they have entered into compacts that give the U.S. certain responsibilities, particularly in defense and economic assistance:

Federated States of Micronesia
Marshall Islands
Palau

These entities have different levels of political autonomy, with some having their own constitutions and local governments, while others depend more heavily on U.S. federal oversight for governance and administration. The relationship between these territories and the U.S. varies, primarily defined by legal frameworks like the Insular Cases for territories and specific Compacts of Free Association for the associated states.

Federal District:
Washington, D.C. - Not a state but a federal district where the nation’s capital is located. It has its own local government, but its residents have limited representation in Congress.

How many people does it take to become a state?

What will it be then?

Wyoming is the smallest population. It has about 10 times Greenland.

States are territories first.

No doubt they’d be a territory like Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands or Guam. Just offer to buy Greenland for a certain price. Their parliament can then vote to give a share to each person. There are only 55,000 of them. Simply drilling for oil and mining their rare earths - even some of them - would make them significantly wealthier. The Danes really haven’t developed anything which is one of their chief complaints. They see those checks Alaskans get from the state government every year and would like the same.

Most Greenlanders have some experience with Americans.

The whole world is now connected via Internet.

Elon Musk should offer Starlink services to Greenland for the interim of negotiations with Greenland about becomeing part of US Territory.

If a Majority of Greenlanders vote to become an American Territory, it is hard to see how this would be stopped...

I would offer the humble opinion....until Greenland’s PM meets face-to-face with Trump (likely within 30 days)...nothing is on the table.

If I were the PM...I’d ask for 5 conditions:

1. Once voted upon and in support....an agreed 10-year path from territory to statehood.

2. An absolute limit per-year of people moving into Greenland, with no refugees.

3. Daily ferry service between a US port and Greenland (free of charge).

4. Greenlanders get to keep Danish citizenship (dual nationality).

5. Some kind of ‘cut’ of whatever is dug up, for Greenlanders. (Profit-sharing)

Easiest thing would be to have them enter into a Compact of Free Association with us. We have them with the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau. They basically remain self governing entities but we get to be there and do whatever we want for the specified time period of the agreement. The existing 3 we have are in duration for approximately 50 years.
