Victor Davis Hanson: America and Europe Can Hang Together—Or Hang Separately
American Greatness ^ | 9 Jan, 2025 | Victor Davis Hanson

Europe may soon quietly rejoice that Biden is gone, Trump is back, and they have a strong, loyal, and rowdy friend rather than a simpering enabler.

Consider these European and American binaries.

On December 20, 2024, a terrorist, Taleb Al-Abdul Mohsen, rammed his SUV into a Christmas crowd in Magdeburg, Germany. He killed 6 pedestrians and injured 299 others.

Eleven days later, on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans, Louisiana, Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar smashed his pickup into a festive crowd. He murdered fifteen and hurt over 35.

Germany’s fertility rate is scarcely above 1.4—about average for a shrinking European Union. About 20 percent of the country is now foreign-born, a record high.

American fertility has precipitously dived to 1.6. The foreign-born now represent 15 percent of the American resident population, the highest in both actual numbers (50 million) and percentages in history.

The German military is a shell of its former self, with fewer than 200,000 soldiers and a shortage of almost all types of weapons.

The U.S. military, after being humiliated in Afghanistan, is currently down some 40,000-plus recruits. It faces shortages of anti-tank weapons, artillery shells, ships, and logistical support.

Germany may finally manage to spend 2% of its GDP on defense; the United States is heading downward below 3%—the lowest in over 80 years since the Great Depression.

Last year, the German economy shrank; this year, it will scarcely grow, in part because of shortages of affordable fossil fuels.

Germans pay four times what Americans on average do for electricity. Yet the Trump administration has promised an oil and natural gas renaissance, hoping to expand both production and exports with envisioned new pipelines and liquefied natural gas terminals.

In sum, the U.S. is beginning to mimic the pathologies of Europe—and yet in the next four years...

If only Europe could do a course correction (reversal) and rid its self of the jihadis.

The world has changed. The Cold War and World War 2 are over.

Europe is all recovered from WW2 and grown up. It can take care of itself. So can the USA.

Mad respect for VDH as a historian and thinker but he is wrong on this one.

The greatest anti-truth, anti-freedom, anti-individual, anti-life collective in the history of civilization has a large presence in Europe. It has a foothold in The United States of America. Lesser evil collectives destroy, dehumanize too. In these collectives are individuals. Listen to their words and watch their deeds.

I have a grandson. He would make a good soldier.
He needs a good job and some discipline.
I’m a Vietnam era VET and that experience really improved
my life’s direction.
A significant number of my family and friends
were military ranging from Marines to Air force and
all services in-between.
Today, I would not recommend to any white man to go in today’s woke military.
I would not recommend it for ANY man.
The liberals have made it impossible for “real” men
to be good soldiers, they just want them to be cannon fodder to be wasted in Liberal “woke pursuits”.
Us old timers know BS when we see it!
I’m an American, why should I go to war for some “Woke”
a$$hole that wants to destroy the America I grew up in?
Our young men have figured “woke” out.
Fight your own wars A$$holes.

They fear that he is an isolationist

They fear he will no longer be a Daddy Warbucks as well they should.

Hansen is clinging to the traditions of the past.

It is a tradition that we write blank checks to the Euroweenies.

Tradition has no place in our spiritual life nor does tradition have a place in our foreign policy upon which our national security rests.

It is not my intention to conflate spiritual things and foreign policy.

But Jesus made it clear we must move on from tradition if we want to live in the spirit, By your tradition you make void the word of God.

Empires have fallen doing the same things again and again, because the apparatchiks kept saying, "that is the way things have always been done."

“Europeans likely want—and need—Trump to restore a more deterrent U.S. military, not a woke one. So, who knows—Europe may soon quietly rejoice that Biden is gone, Trump is back, and they have a strong, loyal, and rowdy friend rather than a simpering enabler.”

Not what my sources are telling me about Trump, which is that Europe will have to put on their Big Boy Pants and look out for their own interests for at least the next 4 years. We’re not sure what that will entail (maybe a full pullout from NATO, or a reduction in force levels, or removal from front-line countries, etc.), but Europe will have to step up as we pivot towards China, which is actually a CREDIBLE threat to our interests, unlike Russia.

Uncle Sam is in debt to his eyeballs.
Can not add to debt to protect Europe’s borders. Priority #1 : fix USA.

Yes, and yet in the next four years the USA has a brilliant, tireless, devoted, great man as President of the USA.

I love Europe, but if the Europeans are determined to hang themselves by their own Gordian Knot, America might not be able to save them--again.

“The foreign-born now represent 15 percent of the American resident population, the highest in both actual numbers (50 million) and percentages in history.“

And that does not include their children born here but raised in that culture. Kids of immigrants are even more likely to be a terrorist or vote democrat than the immigrant parent.
By that metric I bet 1/3 of people in America right now are foreign born, or have deeply significant ties to the old country such as two immigrant parents, and holding loyalty to an old country and idolize it more so than our founders. Be at Mexico, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Iran etc. And an astonishing number of these first generation children find their way in the government. The Vindman twins, Kamala, Valerie Jarrett and many neocons are examples.

Europe has been trying to commit suicide for more than a century. Ascendant America has saved them, notably in World Wars I and II and the Marshall Plan.

The election of Donald Trump proves that the USA is still ascendant, despite the fact that millions of Americans have also succumbed to the disease of decadence which is destroying Europe, blatantly manifest as wokeism, socialism, etc. European opposition to Trump is yet another manifestation of the European deathwish.

If Europe is determined to commit suicide, America might not be able to prevent it.

If Europe is determined to commit suicide, America might not be able to prevent it.

Instead we need to pivot to Latin America and Asia.

All we can do is to contain Europe.

Maybe Trump has that in mind when he proposes the annexation of Greenland and Canada. Of course, his primary purpose is containing China-Russia-Iran-North Korea, but his plan probably also includes the containment of a decadent, suicidal, unstable, and unreliable Europe as well.

Just as some Greenlanders react positively to Trump's plan, we might find that clear thinking Europeans might also want to join America in ascendancy rather than continue sinking into the quagmire of European decadence.

I think that Trump’s plans for Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal is about containing China.

China runs the canal. Trudeau allowed Chinese troops to be based in his country and Greenland is located in a strategic location.

Yes, of course that’s true. If the Europeans have any sense at all, they will see the wisdom in that.
