President-elect Donald Trump and Melania Trump paid their respects to the late President Jimmy Carter as he lay in state on Wednesday night.
The Trumps arrived at the U.S. Capitol just before 5:30 p.m. and were greeted by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
The Trumps stood solemnly and silently for more than a minute before Carter’s casket as they paid their respects to the 39th president of the United States.
After Carter’s passing last week, the president-elect had kind words to share, writing in a Truth Social post about the kinship presidents share.
“The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude,” Trump said.
The Trumps were seen walking the halls of Congress, followed by Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and his wife, Kimberly, moments before arriving at Carter’s casket.
A reporter asked Trump how it felt for him to return to the Capitol.
“It feels great. It couldn’t feel better,” he added.
Trump also responded to a reporter’s question about whether he was at the Capitol to encourage Senate Republicans to combine his agenda into one bill.

Thank you Trump for being a good example and speaking kindly about Mr. Carter. That is making America great again.

In general, Republicans are respectful to anyone who is passing away. It was the Democrats (remember the circus funeral of Sen Wellstone, D-MN?) and the RINOs (disrespect shown in McCain’s funeral) that use a funeral or a wake into a political event.
In many ways, Mr. Carter set the standard by which later generations of Democrats have followed. High taxes, squandering of resources, cozying up to America’s enemies while disrespecting its allies, utter weakness in the face of terrorism and rogue nations, and always with a smile.
The hosts of the evening shows on Newsmax have NOT spoken kindly of Carter the last couple days. They had the audacity to speak the truth.
Trump did what he had to do, and that’s fine. He was being “presidential”, and he and Melania played the role well.
Good; now that the BS platitudes for the MSM are out of the way, Trump can refer to Jimmah as the pathetic douche that Carter is in just a few more days.
Not sure if a good idea to trash the man. His policies were weak and ineffective. More than enough to castigate his policies and do better. His bad policies have been greatly superseded in terms of modern democrat really bad policies.

Truth! He has said previously that he disagreed with Carter, but this is not the time for that. He is very classy.

Trump is a far bigger man than I am. I served in the military under Carter, and I have never forgotten what he did to our military, our country, and the world.
Exactly right. There have only been two Dem presidents since him, but together they set the US back generations. Clinton built up China to the superpower they are today. Obama ushered in racial Woke division. But it was Carter who blazed a trail for them.
I looked at Trump’s face with Melania at his side, and I know that he was thinking that could easily have been him in the rotunda in the casket. It had to be a very sobering moment for President Trump and am sure made him more determined to fulfill his destiny with history for which God has saved him.
