Surgeon General Calls for Cancer Warnings on Alcohol
The NY Times ^ | Jan 03, 2025 | Roni Caryn Rabin

Alcohol is a leading preventable cause of cancer, and alcoholic beverages should carry a warning label as packs of cigarettes do, the U.S. surgeon general said on Friday.

It is the latest salvo in a fierce debate about the risks and benefits of moderate drinking as the influential U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans are about to be updated. For decades, moderate drinking was said to help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

That perception has been embedded in the dietary advice given to Americans. But growing research has linked drinking, sometimes even within the recommended limits, to various types of cancer.

Labels currently affixed to bottles and cans of alcoholic beverages warn about drinking while pregnant or before driving and operating other machinery, and about general “health risks.”

But alcohol directly contributes to 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 related deaths each year, the surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, said.

I doubt such a warning will have any substantial effect on alcohol consumption. However, sounds like a prelude for states suing the alcohol companies just like they did the tobacco companies.

I don't doubt that for a minute. Waiting for the "second-hand alcohol exposure" threat to become a thing by which to sue.

Is this the same surgeon general who says that genital mutilation is a safe and effective treatment for socialization issues?

The Surgeon General is an insane male who thinks he’s a woman.

Like the tobacco companies.

I’ve been waiting for that. It’s really only a matter of time before the prohibitionist “Karens” come after booze.

No smoking, no drinking, no food with flavor. They take the fun out of life everyway they can.

That plus the all to install AI cameras nationwide to spot anybody suspected of driving impaired, but really just to further spy on every American.

The surveillance state is already here, but now they're going to give it to us good and hard.

Perhaps warning labels for a powdery substance found at the White House -- and of course investigated away by the FBI -- should be considered, considering:
Cocaine use and head and neck cancer risk: A pooled analysis in the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology Consortium Cancer Med. 2024 Feb 24;13(3):e7019.

Substance found in White House confirmed to be cocaine CBS News, 5 July 2023

Visiting California can give you cancer too. Warning labels are everywhere. I don’t know why dummy tourists visit that joint.

Alcohol has been consumed for thousands of years. There is no need for government warnings. Unless you want to say that it is associated with longer life and cures many illnesses.

Of course Alcohol can be abused but so can food.

If that was such a big deal, wouldn’t he have suggested that long ago? Has been in office since March of 2021.

Worthless virtue signaling right before he gets Trumped.

Vivek Murthy is the SG. Reminds me of the song Rebel Rebel by Bowie…”can’t tell if you’re a boy or a girl”
