Elon talks about the fertility crisis but this fiscal year he gave 146 junior engineering careers ($100k or less) to H1B foreigners (all from India). This is not extraordinarily elite 0.1% talent. That’s 146 American families that all could’ve had children.

H1B salary data is public. A quick scroll through will show you that the H1B program has nothing to do with “talent.” They are cheap and can’t leave their jobs. All these jobs should go to Americans.

There is a massive misunderstanding about H-1B visas and the type of people coming in on these visas. These are not elite top 1% type engineers and programmers. They are mostly very mediocre and nothing special. These people are brought in for cheap labor, not elite talent. There are exceptions, sure. Very few.

I’m sorry but nobody wants to live in an America defined by soulless utilitarianism where every facet of life is geared towards maximizing GDP and corporate profits over living a meaningful and fulfilling life. The H-1B folks claim we have to import foreigners because don’t have enough American engineers.
So how about this? How about we produce more American engineers? High schools have drama clubs and French clubs. Start by investing a few dollars, and put engineering clubs in American high schools.
Side point: I taught high school physics. My non-science supervisors were constantly trying to water down the curriculum. As just one example, they removed the Algebra 1 requirement to take Physics 1. How crazy is that?
So any reform will have to address this sort of nonsense.
Trump had better tell Musk to shut up because promises were made the Trump Arministration would look out after Americans. Americans first or the Republican Party will be abandoned just like the U.K. dumped the Tories.

Hands-on lab work is critical to understanding science and engineering concepts. So naturally my school district eliminated most labs.
Other school districts schedule labs only once a month.
That’s a disgrace.

I am a big Trump fan but if he does not DRASTICALLY REDUCE H-1b visas Trump will be making a mistake as big as declaring a state of emergency over Covid which ended up with us being locked down. Enough is enough. Americans first or go away.

I’m not claiming that. The engineering problem in this country is two-fold. One, not enough American citizens are going into the field. For example, a couple of years ago I visited the engineering department of a nearby university.
On one wall there was a picture of all the graduate students in petroleum engineering. There were about 40 of them. One has a Polish-sounding first and last name. One had an English-sounding first and last name. All the rest were obviously either Chinese or Middle Eastern.
This is a serious concern.
The second problem here is that American engineers are being undercut by cheap H-1B imports, as you noted.
