Johnson allies urge Trump to intervene as messy speaker battle threatens to delay 2024 certification

Allies of Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., are urging President-elect Trump to publicly reaffirm support for the House GOP leader to avoid a messy, protracted battle that could delay the certification of his own victory.

"If we have some kind of protracted fight where we can’t elect a speaker — the speaker’s not elected; we’re not sworn in. And if we’re not sworn in, we can’t certify the election," Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., told Fox News Digital.

House lawmakers are returning to Washington, D.C., for a chamber-wide vote to elect the speaker on Friday, Jan. 3. Just days later, on Monday, Jan. 6, the House will meet to certify the results of the 2024 election.

Johnson is facing a potentially bruising battle to win the speaker’s gavel for a full Congressional term, with several House Republicans vocally critical of the Louisiana Republican and his handling of government funding.

His predecessor went through 14 public defeats in his quest to win the gavel, finally securing it after days of negotiations with holdouts on the 15th House-wide vote.

When he was ousted, Johnson won after a three-week inter-GOP battle that saw Congress paralyzed for its duration.

But some House Republicans are now warning that they can afford few delays in what Trump himself said he hopes will be a very active first 100 days of his second term.

"To ensure President Trump can take office and hit the ground running on Jan. 20, we must be able to certify the 2024 election on Jan. 6. However, without a speaker, we cannot complete this process," Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., told Fox News Digital.

Who are the key groups/people who need to be there on January 6, 2025 to certify the election?

Vice-president to count the ballots

House of Representatives and Speaker to certify

Senators?

What will happen if someone (e.g. the vice-president) does not show up?

“ What will happen if someone (e.g. the vice-president) does not show up?”

Nothing. Congress has the job of counting the votes. They have done so at least 8 times without a VP, and there were several other times when the VP didn’t show up.

The special joint session has precedence over the organization of both Houses, and the Speaker is only 1/535 participants with no special role.

Congress “certifies” nothing. And if the special joint session for some reason failed to convene, since the results of the electoral vote are widely known, any Federal judge could administer the oath to Trump after noon on 1/20/25 and things would go on as normal.

This fake certification nonsense has gotten way out of control around here.

Johnson is the biggest disappointment of 2024. Drain the Swamp. He voted to give Billions to Ukraine, the dollars that should be helping Americans. I vote NO to speaker Johnson. Forget what Johnson says. WATCH WHAT HE DOES!.

He (and others) were just going to push that horrible CR through. Right through.

He may be a nice guy but he has no business being Speaker. We need the Speaker equivalent of a wartime consigliere.

These douchebags gotta be deep state. Trump is the reason this election
Cycle did what it did., and this Speaker basically screwed him over.
What team is Johnson on?
This guy Johnson is VERY sus, and needs disposed of!
CAN’T REPUBLICANS ELECT A SERIOUS REPUBLICAN WHO WANTS TO WIN FOR AMERICA?!
They need to get their crap together, go behind closed doors, elect a conservative MAGA loving Speaker, to help Trump save this Country, cause Johnson is NOT that guy!
End of story!

That's a big-ass dose of common sense right there. That's exactly what would happen.

Precisely so. Instead of a 1500 page bill, we got a 118 page bill. I suspect collusion between Speaker Johnson, Musk and Trump.

When they engineered the chain of events which led to ousting McCarthy and installing Johnson as Speaker, were there other candidates for speaker? Were there any MAGA members of the House in the running?

It would be great to have such a speaker if such person exists.

Sure there were MAGA candidates for Speaker. They just didn’t have nearly enough votes.

What's wrong with you....That 1500 page CR was never going pass. And it came around at a critical time...just like it was supposed to.

And voila...here comes 116 pages with one little stipulation that would never be approved by either party.

Then voila....like a miracle....with 118 pages...passed....and voila....

It's called "The Art of the Deal"...

Mike did an excellent job...and Trump was with him every step of the way and will back Mike 100%.

The Dems got snookered. They got nothing.

The question has now moved to who should replace Johnson? As it stands now, the House party breakdown is 219 (R) to 211 (D) with 5 vacancies (according to this source). The 38 Pub members who voted against the Trump-backed spending bill could raise hell and put a rock under it, in the search for a new Speaker.

If Musk's nomination for the speakership can take enough pressure off of the GOP catherd, they might jump at the idea.

That's not going to happen. Trump will back Johnson 100%.

I believe the end vote was 34 members.
