One of my favorite singer/songwriters is the late Guy Clark, who once said:
"The key to a great lyric is to convey as much information in as few of words as possible.”
With that in mind, the two songs above meet that criteria. Here are the lines I selected from those songs:
Sunday Morning Coming Down" - Johnny Cash (Kris Kristofferson)
Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
"Tangled up in Blue" -- Bob Dylan
I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the axe just fell
Workin’ on mysteries without any clue.
“Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”
The Who, Won’t Get Fooled Again
Here is a ping for song night.
To live as one is love’s reward.
Prisencolinensinainciusol
In de col men seivuan
prisencolinensinainciusol ol rait
Uis de seim cius men
op de seim ol uat men
in de colobos dai
And all that is gone
And all that's to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon -Pink Floyd Eclipse
“Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun
But mama.... that’s where the fun is”
Shady Grove (traditional Appalachian)
[Chorus]
Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove, I say
Shady Grove, my little love
I’m bound to go away
V1
Cheeks are like a blooming rose
Eyes are the deepest brown
She’s the darlin’ of my heart
Stay ‘til the sun goes down
[Chorus]
V2
I went to see my Shady Grove
She’s standin’ in the door
Shoes and stockings in her hand
Little bare feet on the floor
[Chorus]
V3
I wish I had a needle and thread
As fine as I could sew
I’d sew my true love to my side
And down the road I’d go
[Chorus]
V4
I wish I had a big fine horse
And corn to feed him on
A pretty little girl to stay at home
To feed him when I’m gone
[Chorus]
V5
There’s peaches in the summertime
And apples in the fall
If I can’t have the one I want
I don’t want none at all
Don’t let the screen door hit you on your way out.
Smoke from a distant fire-Sanford Townsend Band.
High anxiety
It’s always the same
Ooh ‘xiety
It’s you that I blame
It’s very clear to me
I’ve got to give in
High anxiety
You win!
The Cure “Friday I’m in Love”
Thursday - I don’t care about you.
"Hold on tight" (to your dreams)
Well, I’m a-standin’ on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
Such a fine sight to see
It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford
Slowin’ down to take a look at me.
The line I like from that song: Little too tall, could have used a few pounds
Joni Mitchell- “I’m frightened by the devil and drawn to those who ain’t afraid”
Sunshine come on back another day
I promise you I'll be singing
This old world, she's gonna turn around
Brand new bells'll be ringing
.
Jonathan Edwards - Sunshine
“The searchers all say, they might have made White Fish Bay,
If they’d put fifteen more miles behind them.”
The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
Gordon “Gordy” Lightfoot.
No relation to Lori Lightfoot . . .
When they turn the pages of history
And these days have passed long ago
Will they read of us with sadness
For the seeds that we let grow
We turned our gaze
From the Castles in the distance
Eyes cast down
On the path of least resistance
Cities full of hatred fear and lies
Withered hearts and cruel tormented eyes
Scheming demons dressed in Kingly guise
Beating down the multitudes and scoffing at the wise
Rush “A Farewell to Kings”
W.A.S.P. Keep holding on.
