Israel Claims Credit for al-Assad’s Ouster, but Sees Risk in His Absence
NY Times ^ | Dec 9, 2024 | Patrick Kingsley

For the past year, Israel’s allies and enemies have pressed the Israeli military to limit its attacks on Iran and its partners in Lebanon and Syria, hoping to avoid a regional escalation.

The fall of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, a longtime ally of Iran, is seen in Israel as the crowning consequence of that yearlong campaign against Iran and its interests, even if it is also tinged with uncertainty about what comes next.

Without Israel’s blows against Hezbollah and Iran, Israeli analysts and leaders say, Syria’s rebels might not have dared revive their rebellion against Mr. al-Assad. And Iran and Hezbollah, which had propped up his regime for a decade, might have been better placed to save him.

NO nation should ever again expect American blood to be spilled for them.

Each country is responsible its own defense. See Ukraine’s failure, and learn!

The Ukrainians have been holding off the Russians for nearly three years. I hardly call that a failure.

I hadn’t heard that, though it’s not out of the realm of their ideology… I think they will have more pressing issues to deal with first. They have a lot of factions, not all of them are Islamists or even Arabs, not all of them had any part in taking Damascus but still hold large Syrian territory. They need to unite as one people all equal under the law regardless of creed or culture or clan. Otherwise they will be busy fighting each other.

Israel as a democracy was obligated to take out hezbollah as well as they could so that their 60,000 internally displaced refugees from the North could return home.

That it had the mixed blessing(?) of the fall of Assad may prove good, bad, or worse for Israel in the long run.

But they had no choice. A democratic nation cannot accept daily rocket attacks from a neighbor for over 365 days without taking action.

That’s my quote.

Without America’s billions in gifted arms, there would undoubtedly have been a complete overrun of Ukraine by Russia.

My point is that nations should not be relying on Uncle Sugar to save their sorry behinds. They need to arm up to the levels required for their own self defense.
