New York CNN — The CEO of UnitedHealthcare was shot and killed in midtown Manhattan Wednesday morning in an apparent targeted attack as he was about to attend the company’s annual investor conference, a law enforcement official tells CNN. The gunman remains on the loose.
Brian Thompson was walking toward the New York Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, dressed in a suit and tie, to attend UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference being held in the ballroom.
A gunman, who investigators tell CNN was masked in the freezing temperatures, waited for about 10 minutes before Thompson’s arrival, before opening fire from 20 feet away shooting multiple times, striking Thompson.
The gunman fled, cutting through an alleyway and hopping on to a bicycle, the official told CNN. Investigators are continuing to canvas the area. Police currently believe that the suspect fled into Central Park.
The 50-year-old executive was shot in the chest. Responding emergency workers took him to Mount Sinai West in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead, according to the NYPD.
“We are deeply saddened by this morning’s events in the area and our thoughts are with all affected by the tragedy. Additional questions should be directed to the New York Police Department,” a New York Hilton Midtown general manager told CNN, noting that Thompson was not a registered guest at the hotel.
Details on the circumstances are not immediately clear, but investigators say it appears to be a targeted shooting. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, the NYPD said. Police are expected to provide a briefing on the incident later this morning.
CNN has reached out to UnitedHealthcare for comment.
Thompson was named chief executive officer for UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. UnitedHealthcare is part of UnitedHealth Group, ranked fifth in the Fortune 500,

Newsmax - NYPD says killing appears to be a planned hit. Gunman had suppressor on weapon.
Important people wanted him dead.
Important people will make sure that the investigation goes nowhere.
The fact that the gunman had a bicycle waiting for him in the alley means that he has carefully planned his escape. It is reasonable then to expect that he probably did head toward Central Park, which is only a few blocks away. However, once in the park, the best thing for him to do would be to ditch the bike wile unseen, change out of his black clothes, and leave the park, casually walking towards Times Square.
I hope the assassin remembered to put on his helmet before riding away on the bike.
Otherwise some Karen would have called the cops on him.
Lol.
It’s a plot right out of Bluebloods.
Note to self . . .
United Healthcare denied me medicine the doctor prescribed before a procedure based solely on cost. Instead , the doctor’s office saved enough free samples up for what I needed.
I suspect the shooter lost someone due to the denial of medicine or a procedure based on cost.
This looks more like a professional job
“..This looks more like a professional job...”
^THIS^
Agree. The pre-planned getaway, the use of a suppressor, chest shots from 20 feet pretty much spells out a paid hitman.
Your scenario is unlikely—unless it was a family member of a professional hitman that was denied treatment.
Lol.
I wonder if he had locked his bike?
Just one more thing: don’t forget to put your new clothes in the backpack before leaving home.
Thank you.
A judge and his wife were killed. The murder remained unsolved until years later when discovered it was a paid hit. The hitman was a carnival worker which led people to believe the police slow-walked the case.
Noteworthy is the lack of a description of the gunman
Yep, just like I thought.
SEIU assassination
I agree that is the likely motive.
The choice of venue is also telling. If the motive was something personal and not connected to his job, the killing would have been easier to arrange in a less public spot. After all, this killer had to have gathered a pretty detailed foreknowledge of the victim’s daily routine to avoid having to loiter around for hours waiting for the opportunity, making the job far more complicated that it otherwise needed to be. That the killing took place at mid-day on 6th Avenue probably means that it was intended to be as public and as jarring as possible. In other words, it was meant to terrorize and send a message.
