The British parliament backed a bill Friday that would legalize assisted suicide.
Following hours of debate, the United Kingdom’s House of Commons voted 330 to 275 in favor of a law that allows citizens with less than six months to live to end their own lives, according to several reports.
The “Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life)” bill must still pass through parliamentary committees and the UK’s House of Lords to become law, according to CNN. Kim Leadbeater, the lawmaker who introduced the bill, expects this to take an additional six months, according to Reuters.
Oxford ethicist Dr. Calum Miller wrote on X the vote was a “huge step towards state-assisted and doctor-assisted murder of old and sick people” in the UK.
“A truly dark day,” he wrote.
Currently, assisted suicide is illegal in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Friday’s vote puts the UK on track to join the handful of other countries that legalize assisted suicide, including Canada, Austrailia and New Zealand. Ten U.S. states, along with Washington, D.C., also permit assisted suicide.
Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program is now the fifth leading cause of death in the country, with 13,241 people choosing assisted suicide in 2022 alone.
“Almost no MAiD requests are denied by clinicians, and the median time between written request and death from MAiD in 2022 was merely eleven days,” Ethics and Public Policy Center visiting fellow Alexander Raikin wrote in an August report.
In October, a committee reviewing MAiD deaths in Canada found multiple instances of patients seeking assisted suicide for reasons like fears of homelessness or isolation, according to the Associated Press.
During debate Friday, British lawmaker Robert Jenrick said the bill would create “imperceptible changes in behaviors.”
“There will be the grandmother who worries about her grandchildrens’ inheritance if she does not end her life,” said Jenrick. “There will be the widow who relies on the kindness of strangers, who worries; it preys on her conscience. There will be people who are (and we all know them in our lives) shy, who have low self-esteem, who have demons within them.”
Another parliament member Danny Kruger pointed out that the definition of terminal illness in the bill does not provide safeguards.
“In the case of eating disorders, you just need to refuse food, and the evidence is in jurisdictions around the world… that that would be enough to qualify you for an assisted death,” he said.
Kruger said he has met assisted death specialists in Canada who “personally kill hundreds of patients a year.”
To the left, you are only as valuable as your ability to contribute to the coffers for those in power. You have no inherent value.

I got a feeling that all of the people against this sort of thing are neither sick or old.
Before my 85 yo Dad died he used to talk about how disgusted he was with assisted suicide. Then the brain tumors happened and he said over and over how much he wished each meal would be his last. Poor man wasted away in a bed for 6 months. Just tortured.
your.point ?
My point is that the people saying assisted suicide for terminally ill and extreme elderly people is such a horrible thing are people who have no idea how horrible that kind of existence is.
Just trying to get rid of the “useless eaters”. Nazis.
The problem is (though nobody has stated it yet) that the guvmint won’t stop there; it will eventually start determining just who is ready for the “suicide machine” on its own, no matter what you might want. It’s been done on the continent before, some 80-100 years ago...
Start with parliament.

If Hitler had known that all he had to do was wait, he might not have seen the need to invade.
When my Dad was burned, and they would shoot him up with morphine then begin scrubbing the damaged tissue, he wished over and over that he was dead, because he said, it still was pure torture because the morphine wasn’t able to deaden the pain.
This went on after the debriding/scraping process too, as he had to have skin grafts, where they skin one part of your body to get skin to put on a worse part.
Then during the healing, which takes years, the skin sometimes cracks wide open. I say cracks because it gets hard like rawhide and somewhat brittle.
Thankfully no one was able and willing to grant him his request...
Or we would have missed out on more than thirty more years of having him around. The experience made him a better man, more compassionate, and more iron willed, enough to overcome some vices that had previously roiled his marriage.
This isn’t going to end with helping the terminally ill to die. Every country where ‘assisted dying’ has been introduced the scope has kept expanding ever further till the point where people who are merely depressed or mentally ill are enabled to commit suicide, and the disabled (like a Canadian veteran who asked for help with equipping her house with ramps and handlebars) being pressured to end themselves to save resources.
The death merchants have scented blood and now they’ve got their foot in the door, they are going to, as with abortion, keep pushing until its available on demand and not just under the most extreme circumstance used to justify making it legal.

Agreed. The left are masters at what some call the slippery slope. Just like abortion started out being only with hardship cases, then for any reason but only 1st trimester, etc. The left are now doing the same at the end of life that they’ve been doing at the beginning of life.
Voluntary, then mandatory.
Assisted suicide = post birth abortion. The same arguments are used to justify both murders. In the not so distant future people will be terminated at a certain age regardless of health status to save resources. There are movies about it.
socialized medicine is taking to long to kill them all off
hmmmm...didn’t someone take heat for mentioning “death panel” once? anyway, what a waste of protein. you’d think that the PTB would come up with a way to make something useful out such a soon to be ubiquitous resource instead of just disposing of it all. after all when the natural resources used by these human “repositories” is taken into consideration the value of these condensed natural resources could be astronomical given a cheap method of dissemblment and distribution. maybe with the right food coloring and proper packaging it could be the perfect food source for the masses? FD&C green no.3 would be the perfect choice for color as very few people have an allergic reaction(they would deal with it or starve) and packaging could be in multiple ways. and how about the motto “in the future we won’t waste the past ...we’ll make it dinner”. not sure about a name for it but I’m sure someone on FR will come up with something appropriate.
