While they certainly need to go after the "big ticket" items, a lot of the waste in the Federal Government is deep in the weeds, a million small papercuts that add up to billions across the entire bureaucracy.

Example. I worked for a government agency for nearly six years right out of college. The work I did was in Internal Auditing, basically reviewing the various parts of the agency to make sure they had adequate controls in place, were doing what they were supposed to be doing, no fraud and waste etc. Each year we would issue a final report with recommendations.

But the branch I was in ONLY did the financial side of the internal audit, there was a second entire branch that did the IT side and a third branch that reviewed things like training, physical security etc. So, you had three entire branches of 10-12 auditors each to produce one annual audit report.

The thing is the three branches rarely communicated with each other, if the IT branch discovered a problem of the financial nature, well not their problem, they only did IT. So, you often ended up with this disjointed Frankenstein mishmash of an audit report at year-end with duplicate findings if an issue impacted both the financial side and the IT side.

Easy solution. Combine the three branches into one centralized audit branch, likely get rid of about a third of the employees that were duplicating work and have much better communications and a better end product.

I brought that up to the Division Director one day and she just laughed. She said I was exactly right, and everybody knew it and had known it for years. She went on to say that the reason it was not done and would never be done is that it would take years for all the studies to determine it was good idea, then approvals to actually make the change and the Union would put up a huge fight because it would result in job cuts. Basically, nobody in management was willing to take the first step because they didn't want a multi-year fight over it.

SNAP is a scam at so many levels. Convenience stores, which have the highest markups of any retailer, carry a couple bananas, 1 orange, 3 apples, some bread, some meat, and milk to fulfill the government requirement of selling the four food groups to be eligible for SNAP payments. So instead of going to Aldi’s or Sam’s Club to get the best-bang-for-your-buck deals, SNAP participants readily squander their handout at high markup stores.
