California, other states, may soon ban motorhome sales

...The RV industry saw it coming. Since 2020 it’s been working with CARB (the California Air Resources Board—creator of ACT) on how these regulations would affect the industry and RVers. Industry had hoped CARB would work in an exemption for recreational vehicles. That didn’t happen. The situation is further complicated by more than just the ACT regulation. It also involves a trio of regulations passed in the last two to three years: the ACT, the Omnibus Low NOx rule, and the Advanced Clean Fleets rule. Together, these regulations are designed to transition medium- and heavy-duty vehicles to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) by 2036.... if nothing changes, motorhomes will not be able to be sold and registered in California beginning in 2025....

... the regulation, with a few exceptions, applies to all medium-duty or heavy-duty vehicles with combustion engines. Any non-exempted on-road vehicle over 8,500 GVWR is included [and] is covered by the regulation, including Class B motorhomes most of which have a GVWR over that amount.”...

... According to the fact-sheet, “CARB said that a used vehicle, defined as one with more than 7,500 miles on the odometer, could be brought in and registered. Any motorhome with less than 7,500 miles would be considered a new vehicle and would have to be compliant in order to be registered.”...

... The prohibition prevents California dealers from selling non-compliant vehicles to anyone, including residents of states not subscribing to ACT....

RV Industry Assn Nov 7 bulletin and FAQ's

States currently prescribing to ACT include: Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington.. RIVA expects Vermont, Colorado, Maryland, New Mexico, and Rhode Island to follow by 2027. It's to be expected RV dealers in these states also would be prevented from selling RVs to buyers from ACT non-compliant states.

Smoking is being banned on beaches and parks in California, someone should tell us what effect surfboard wax has on the ocean and how surfing disrupts wildlife and how females surfing and sunning exposes the women to the male gaze, at least as long as males are allowed to be present to observe beach and surf activity.

If ever there was a place with a need to kick out most all of its entire political class it would be Kalifornia.

California has gone full Stalinist. If you like it, you can’t have it. Clean streets, safe neighborhoods, motor homes, whatever. You can’t have any of them.

It would be a real tragedy, except that the majority of CA voters are evidently happy with it. Or perhaps they are too brainwashed to know what the hell is going on.

There are a lot of nice regular van conversions I’ve seen people travel/live in and they are much easier to drive and find spaces to park with. Some like the bmw vans but regular cargo vans retrofitted inside can work when you efficiently use space and have adjustable interiors.

Hundreds of California curbside spaces are filled with RVs of the “working homeless”.

As I read it, only new RVs are affected, so selling these older RVs can make “real” money for their owners.

(Enough for a down-payment on a real house?)

Never heard of “BMW vans”.

They also want to put speed limiters on cars. Newsom recently vetoed a bill that required speed ‘warnings’ built-in, but the liberal maniacs there keep floating new bills with the hopes one will eventually get through.

That’s how I read it.

“CARB said that a used vehicle, defined as one with more than 7,500 miles on the odometer, could be brought in and registered.”

I could see shifty dealers rolling the odometer forwards instead of backwards.

Not to worry. Springfield MO has enough RV’s for every citizen in the US.

“ROFL! My, how far we’ve come. Or fallen.”

We haven’t totally lost the can-do entrepreneur spirit. We’re Americans. If there’s an angle to make money off a situation, someone will find it. “I seen my opportunities and I took ‘em.”

Oregon? Then Marathon Coach is affected, and the factory will have to move out of state. Marathon does not sell cheap RVs. The current prices for new coaches are north of 3 million.

The world of RVs is very hard to understand.

They depreciate vertically. It’s the exact antithesis of a conventional house, which appreciates.

A drive through Clearwater Florida we’ll get you about 40 mobile home parks, and some of them still have their wheels on them. They depreciate they do not appreciate.

But boy are they preferred by old folks because they’re so little to clean and they are not the homes of the poverty stricken. You will not find anything but Lexus and Mercedes parked outside some of the ritzier mobile home parks.
