The eventual victories of Harris or Trump will shape college sports for years to come.
The NCAA is in amid a fierce battle to maintain the status quo of its relationship with student-athletes. With the presidential election just around the corner, many wonder which side this battle would lean with the hypothetical triumphs of Kamala Harris or Donald Trump.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has been trying for 10 years to maintain the amateur sports model that has distinguished it for most of its history. This model suffered a hard blow in 2021 when the Supreme Court recognized that athletes/students have full rights over their name, image, and likeness (NIL).
Video thumbnail The battle has plenty of nuances, and the eventual victory of Republicans or Democrats in the imminent Presidential Election could definitively affect the shape that college sports will take in the years to come.
Neither candidate has spoken out specifically on this issue, adding another level of uncertainty to the ongoing dispute between those who want to maintain the status quo and those who wish some drastic changes.
Which way will the balance tip?
The next big goal for those seeking change is to get universities to give their athletes employee status. Although neither Trump nor Harris have spoken on the topic, their respective platforms may shed some light on the issue.
The Democratic Party has a long history of being pro-union and pro-worker. Republicans, in contrast, tend to historically be pro-employer and pro-business. While the next president is unlikely to choose a side in this conflict, their decisions on labor issues will undoubtedly shape the fight.
Specifically, the president has the option to change each year one of the five members of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the agency overseeing compliance with labor laws in the United States.
Currently, the committee is made up of three Biden appointees, one Trump appointee, and one vacant seat. This composition of the NLRB could mean support for college athletes' attempts to unionize.
The outcome of the election is irrelevant in the short term A Harris victory could strengthen this position, giving student organizations the support they need to achieve the final push they need to achieve this goal.
A Trump victory would not change the immediate outlook much. Although Republican Josh Ditelberg is about to receive confirmation as the fifth member, the NLRB will still have a Democratic majority at least until 2026, when Trump could make his first change, assuming he wins the election.
The relationships between universities and their athletes are more complex than ever, and the closeness of the upcoming election only complicates the outlook further. However, the momentum favors students, and it is unlikely that this will change in the short term.
The least important consideration of all.
Trump will give the winner McDonalds.
Kamala will give the team a ride.
WHO CARES? Of all the problems a Harris will cause this is not on any sane person’s radar. People who care more about sports than democracy are pathetic!
Easy prediction: The team in the most corrupt Democrat run city of the two teams will have lost by 10 points. The next day, the score will show them winning by 4 points. (Due to late scores which were not counted the previous evening.)
If women want to play college football with the men it should be OK. Then they can join the NFL after college.
And anyone who believes that classifying scholarship athletes as employees is a good idea hasn't thought it through. The vast majority of college athletic departments run in the red already, and that would make it much worse. The net impact would be schools eliminating programs.
If Kamala wins, trans will still be pushed in women’s college sports and the female athletes will have to keep “forfeiting” games.. If Trump wins, that comes to a stop.
No kidding. How stupid.
I would look for Trump to not do anything about the incessant encroachment and corruption of the sport by the gambling commissions.
The University of Michigan Scandal was broke open by the Lost/Los Vagas Gambling Commission investigative team who followed IPs back to the coaching staff officers. They were trying to follow up on why this group of bettors were always winning their bets when the best minds the business set the risk.
Once the investiogators got into the computers, they found their answers and who the people, like an assistance coach, e.g., offensive coach, were.
They also found other colleges practice tapes from other B1G school servers. They found the video form people setting in the stands who were capturing the signalling. They found recipets. They found several Big Michigan donars involved, and they eventually found Connor Stalions.
The Gambling Commission turned some things over to Michigan. Some they turned over to the B1G; some to the NCAA. They also turned stuff over the FBI and local law enforcement.
Every time Michigan takes the field this year, the effects of the cheating is shown for the affect it had on the game. The NCAA will not have many people claiming the Harbaugh Cheating Scandal(s) are inconsequential.
When the Las Vagas shows up and catches you cheating it’s one for the soon to written history books.
Michigan’s National Championship was consequence of cheating, or was the cheating leveraged by the coaching staff to make bank on side, thereby monetizing the cheating for their own personal financial gain, beyong that of the rewards of winning.
Now that Gambeling is a BIG TIME THING in the world of sports there will always be rumors of corruption between the Gambeling Owners, the Zebras and the yellow flags;)
Yea, Instant will have found they missed a yellow flag and that had they enforced the penality, the other team would not have scored, thus they retroactively fixed the Instant Replay - who could argue with that - I mean there is was and nobody on TV saw the yellow flag or it being picked up by one of the players who handed it back to the Zebra.
If Harris wins, turn off the TV. Hurt ABC, CBS, and NBC. Don’t go to games. Colleges are not your friend. It will be time to lay low.
As long as they don’t adopt the NFL’s stupid kick-off format and other pansy rules.
Army Navy game is going to be fun.
