Civilian shipping and oil companies such as Maersk and BP aren’t the only ones telling their merchant vessels to avoid the Red Sea for fear of being attacked by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels of Yemen. The German government this week ordered two of its warships to go around Africa because of the threats, according to the German magazine Der Spiegel.

On Monday, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the frigate Baden-Wurttemberg and the naval supply ship Frankfurt am Main would take the much longer route around the Cape of Good Hope when returning from a months-long mission in the Indo-Pacific region.

I guess when the Germans occupied France they picked up some bad habits.

Maybe they know something that most don’t?
Maybe that Houthi bunch managed to get their hands on some hypersonic missiles and the technical info on how to use em.
Naaa....they’re just cowards.....LOL

Can Yemen be sued for the extra expense and time it takes to go around Africa?

Germany is extremely reticent to involve themselves in any fighting. No matter how justified it may seem, they will always end up being accused of being the aggressor and the spectre of Nazism will be raised.

Sentimental cruise for the Germans. They are passing over the watery graves of many of their countrymen. They don’t want to join them.

Two U.S. flagged military supply ships did the same thing a few months ago. Be a shame if the Iranian ship that identifies targets for the Houthis would strike a mine or something.

Having been on several navy warships on long cruises, I remember well the sheer joy of getting my rear end back on terra firma and back to my wife!

So, I can imagine the crew of these German “warships” was not too pleased by this cowardly, embarrassing, turn tail order issued to the Captains of these warships by politicians temporarily in charge of a once powerful state.

Actions speak louder than words and a once GREAT Leader who wore a skirt knew this. Her name was Margaret Thatcher.

How could “the specter of Nazism being raised” possibly happen? The Democrats have used up all the “Nazi” and “Hitler” epithet supply. That well is dry.

The frigate Baden-Wurttemberg has no effective capability to defend against anti-ship ballistic missiles, let alone defend the supply ship in her company. It would be pretty embarrassing if the Houthis got lucky. Maybe even more embarrassing that sailing around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid facing the mighty houthis...

“That well is dry”

It’s bottomless.

The Communists have managed to divert attention from the tens of millions they killed to focus on the much more lurid, dramatic National Socialists. So that remains always in the background, ready to be used, no matter what good they do.

Nazism is illegal in Germany. Any hint of it brings down the hammer.

Germany is exceedingly careful about how their AF are deployed with this in regard.

If it’s identifying targets for the Houthis, it should be sunk. I mean that.

Agreed. But Iran isn't the only source of targeting for the Houthis. They have multiple sources on the side of "not Israel/USA/the West", including satellite tracking from Russia.
