Rural hospitals in California are shutting down. Cost load of treating illegal aliens with Medi-Cal coverage is financially unsustainable. Now the state attorney general is suing the only hospital in Arcata, California. It’s a Catholic hospital. They do want to do abortions. What are the folks up there do when the hospital shuts down?

Instead of hiring lawyers, suing the hospital, and waiting for a court ruling, wouldn’t it have been more cost effective and quicker to hire a driver to take her to a hospital that would do the procedure?

Common sense and intelligence is NOT one of CA’s strongest attributes. /s

The article said that as of this coming October 31, Providence Hospital will be the only hospital with a labor and delivery unit in their whole county. At the time of this incident, there had been a hospital 12 miles away, and sending her to that hospital is what Providence did.

Refuse to comply and make the bastards close the hospital down. Make the government carry through with their totalitarian threat and physically show up to shut down services. Make them swim in the optics of it. Time to begin resisting illegal, unconstitutional orders.

If a woman is miscarrying, it’s not an abortion.

I worked for a catholic hospital. This was well understood.

All of these stories coming out about medical staff being “afraid” to provide care for miscarrying women are ridiculous. Either the staff is lying, or they are idiots. No one should go to those facilities for anything.

My wife was bleeding to death in a Catholic hospital following a miscarriage.

We are not Catholic, I have no idea if that had anything to do with it or some other reason. The emergency room wasn't busy.

They finally took care of her after I made a stink about it.

I took her there as it was the closest to where we lived.

Had I known this, I never would have taken her there, but driven the few miles to another hospital.

This was over 40 years ago.

We later found out the miscarriage was probably due to the out gassing of a high temperature sealant she was using at work.

That was NOT the reason. People seem to think that Catholic hospitals are staffed with religious fanatics. In fact, our ED was staffed mostly with Jewish docs and lesbian nurses—and I have entrusted them with my life; and I would do it again tomorrow. They literally do not care about the patient’s religion, race, or insurance. They have a legal and moral obligation to take care of whoever walks in the door.

Most delays in ERs are because of staffing issues and poor triage. This is not always evident to the patients waiting for their “turn.”

I am happy that you advocated for your wife.

When my daughter miscarried, 30 years ago, the doctor sent her to the Catholic hospital where he had privileges; they performed a d&C to make sure everything was out. No problem no hesitation on their behalf.

My strategy would be to appeal the states rulings quickly
If the appeals lose, cut services as the hospital starts to go bankrupt...then leave altogether before bankrupty occurs. If all Sacramento area hospitals leave due to avoiding bankruptcy I am sure legislators and their loved ones would be less inclined to kill the hospitals with lawsuits and directives.

The headline should read “Former Catholic Hospital”.
