Michael Patrick Leahy: ‘Absolutely Illegal’ Bureau of Prisons Refusing to Apply First Step Act Credits to Steve Bannon October 24, 2024 Kaitlin Housler Michael Patrick Leahy Michael Patrick Leahy, CEO and editor-in-chief of The Tennessee Star, said the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) refusal to apply the First Step Act (FSA) good time credits accrued by Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist and host of the popular show War Room, towards an early release to home confinement, is “absolutely illegal.”

Bannon is currently serving a four-month prison sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Danbury, Connecticut, for a 2022 conviction on contempt of Congress charges for ignoring a subpoena from the January 6 Select Committee.

On Monday, The Star learned that Bannon accrued 10 days of good time credit toward an early release from federal prison under the FSA, which means that the former Trump advisor could have been released to home confinement on October 19 instead of his scheduled release date of October 29.

However, the acting warden at the FCI in Danbury, Connecticut, has claimed insufficient time left in Bannon’s sentence to arrange a transfer to home confinement.

If failure to apply a relevant law in the early release case of Steve Bannon is illegal, the warden should be charged with a crime. Enforcing law should not be at a whim. Enforcement of existing law is the only way to stop selective enforcement of law.

Is Bannon still in jail? After serving his time?

What kind of nation have we become when we hold thousands of political prisoners like this?

It seems that Trump is saying nothing either. Trump should let the BOP know that they will be paying a price for for breaking the law if he is elected. Starting with the firing of anyone involved. I bet the would suddenly release Bannon.

I agree. And on the day that Trump is sworn in, right after he pardons Bannon, he can ask the new DOJ to look into it.

I am not expert on this, but the warden doesn’t make these decisions. He is the person who executes the orders of the BOP. And as it is with any government agency, getting anything done takes forever.

I think he’s supposed to be released Oct. 29. If he still is breathing.

At this point Trump cannot and should not say anything, wait until the election is over and if he wins, he can deal with it then.
