CNN’s Anderson Cooper has built his reputation on being a trusted news anchor — not a pundit, which he explained during his show on Thursday.
During a frank conversation on how the news — and CNN — has covered the presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, Cooper defended his network to The Breakfast Club‘s Charlamagne Tha God and Angela Rye. He also defended himself from criticism that he got from Harris supporters after Wednesday’s town hall with the VP.
After the animated conversation turned to how Harris was questioned about her policy and the double standard when it came to how Trump was questioned about his — or his lack thereof, as Cooper explained — Charlamagne said: “What you just did is what I would like to hear more pundits do.”
That raised Cooper’s hackles, because his response to Charlamagne was: “I’m not a pundit.” He explained further:
Cooper: I believe in asking questions and probing people’s arguments and trying to reveal people’s arguments, what’s true and what’s not. And I like — I’m not on MSNBC for a reason. I’m not on some other network for a reason. I’m on CNN, because I want to talk to Republicans. I want to talk to Democrats. And I want to learn from them. I don’t think I have the answers. I’m willing to change my mind. People can convince me of stuff all the time. Like, I’m not a — I don’t even know why I’m talking about myself!
