On Sunday, October 6, 2024, Trump supporters staged a rally in Torrance, Calif. Melissa Toomim, the Republican candidate seeking to unseat Rep. Ted Lieu (D) in the 36th Congressional district also joined the rally along with a group of her supporters.
Thank you for your service.
I lived in Torrance for 2 years in the early 90’s. It was a quaint, pleasant Los Angeles suburb at the time and tended to vote Republican. I don’t know what it’s like there, now.
I live in Torrance. It’s purple, I suppose. Conservatives are here, but not a majority. A couple on the City Council. There remains a core of people who want to raise their families and many Asians and other “Pacific Rim” folks who are upper middle class or aspire to get there.
Democrat Ted Lieu Is the congressman because his district is heavily gerrymandered To include more democratic communities, like Venice, I think.
This is a law and order city In spite of criminals persistently trying to develop a foothold.
Sounds like it may have changed a little bit, demographically since I left. It was predominantly non-Hispanic white when I lived there. There were certainly many Asians and Hispanics in surrounding part of Los Angles, but not a lot in Torrance itself. I found it to be a pleasant place to live. It had a small town feel to it despite being part of Greater Los Angeles.
If I remember correctly, the Dems used illegal voters to oust Dornan from Congress back in the 1990s. Rush talked quite a bit about it. Am I remembering correctly?
When Dornan was first elected to Congress in 1976, he represented a coastal district that stretched from Pacific Palisades down to Palos Verdes. Later, when the district was gerrymandered, he moved to a district in Orange County.
It’s true that the Dems used illegal voters to oust him in 1996, but he contributed to his defeat by running a quixotic campaign for president that year, which went nowhere and wasted many of the resources that he could have used to maintain his seat in an increasingly blue district.
Thanks for the informative follow up. Much appreciated!
The City does have a nice Mayberry vibe in the city government itself. For example, City Hall has a pet, an outdoor cat looked after by the City Clerk’s Office. “City Kitty” scares off other strays and hunts down the vermin.
City Kitty—I love that!
