The Biden administration announced Thursday it is racing to cancel student loans for more than 60,000 public service workers. The move comes just 18 days before the 2024 election and brings the number of public service workers who have now benefitted from such taxpayer-funded largesse to over one million.
The gift delivers $4.5 billion in debt relief to teachers, firefighters, and other service workers who have been dutifully meeting loan repayment obligations for over a decade, the Hill reports.
The administration claims fixes it has made to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program over the past four years has made the windfall possible, which has resulted in upwards of one million public service workers seeing loan forgiveness, costing some $175 billion, the Hill report states.

When is the mortgage cancellation policy kicking in?
Government workers are predominantly Democrat ... this is election interference.
Lawsuit time.
If Biden can convince the universities to forgive the debt, well and good.
To spend tax payer money on it, not so much.
Government workers are predominantly Democrat ... this is election interference.
At the highest.
More vote buying-—how is this NOT illegal?
Not really, they already vote Democrat , so it’s a push............
They protect their own. Who cares how much it costs everyone else?
Not election interference. As you said they were already D voters. It’s just run of the mill graft. Protect their own.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they soon tried to give them all 2 weeks paid leave during election time to work phone banks and knock on doors and fill out nursing home ballots.
Ah, and, that would still not be election interference, because ... Dems!
Right?
How does Congress not put guardrails on spending bills to make this crap impossible.
The only thing Government ever protects is itself...................
ELECTION INTERFERENCE
Let me see if I understand this correctly...
The George W Bush signed program from 2007 which requires payment of the debt on a monthly basis for 10 years as well as ten years of full time public service (most commonly used by police, firefighters, medical professionals, teachers, etc) is somehow some big largess for ‘free’?
The program has traditionally been run by whatever 3rd cousins of political leaders have been appointed, and largely mismanaged. The fixes the White House is touting is merely processing the applications which have often been just sitting around for the better part of 3 years.
It is most definitely not free in any respect, it’s often considered as part of the ‘compensation’ package for those who decide to go into public service, often for lower pay or often incredibly long salary ladders. Missing a single payment in a ten year period can even restart the clock on the program.
It’s about damn time this program was given a kick in the proverbial pants.
He may have canceled those loans, but in the eyes of the IRS and state government those were now be considered income and they could possibly be getting 1099 forms where they will have to pay income taxes on that money. There’s no free ride. Some of these people are gonna find out.
That’s coming too….
The Jubilee of NESARA
I hope they thank us. My SO and I paid enough in taxes over our lifetime to support many, many of them.
And my kids had to contribute with work for their degrees. No government handouts. We, like many on FR made too much for government gimmes. Wouldn’t have it anyway.
Mine did not get a free ride so why are the government workers getting one?
They’ve been doing this for the nonprofit sector for a while. So Planned Parenthood, Red Cross, United Way, Komen Foundation, anything classified as a “nonprofit” qualifies as public service. I used to work for a nonprofit and they were all bragging about having their loans written off, instructing each other how to fill out the applications (during work meetings). One of them got her $30,000 Masters degree paid off by dear Uncle Joe. All illegal under the SCOTUS ruling, BTW.
Can’t wait to send in that $24,000 check April 15th.
