A New Zealand Navy vessel has run aground in Samoa while surveying a reef.
Passengers and crew aboard a New Zealand navy ship have been dramatically rescued after their vessel ran aground off the coast of Samoa in the South Pacific, caught fire and sunk.
According to the NZ defence force, HMNZS Manawanui first got into trouble at about 6:45pm on Saturday while it was conducting a hydrographic survey just one nautical mile from the shore of the island country.
The exact cause of the grounding remains unknown, but it is understood the ship collided with the reef. The 75 crew members and passengers started to leave ship at about 7:50pm and get into lifeboats, with the defence force working with the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) to lead the rescue effort.
Other boats responded to provide help and a P-8A Poseidon from the Royal New Zealand Air Force was also deployed.
“Those on board the life boats and sea boats from HMNZS Manawanui were transferred to vessels that responded to the rescue call and were transported ashore,” the NZ defence force said in a statement.
The big swells and high winds reportedly added more complexity to the situation, with boats constantly being pushed towards the reefs.
“Our fire rescue team responded to the Manawanui vessel navy crew in distress, working from last night until this morning,” the post’s caption read.
“Fortunately, no one was heavily injured and no lives were lost. We're proud to say WE SAVED THEM.”
The NZ defence force said smoke was visible from the ship which was listing heavily on Sunday morning. At about 9:00am, it is believed the vessel capsized entirely and is now below the surface.

So the US doesn’t have the market cornered on ‘stupid’!
Too bad the NZ Navy doesn’t have sonar to see how shallow the waters are when everyone who has a little fishing boat does. Then they caught fire but managed to sink below the surface after running aground....really.
Deserters. They didn’t want to go back.
Totally unsurprising. Another DEI poster girl.
I bet she can’t parallel park, either.
The equipment was likely made in China.
That or the operator had the equipment units set to Metric instead of Imperial.
I was thinking that too. Brits, aussies, nz’ers phrase things differently.
A bit more detail on the intrepid captain from the New Zealand navy’s site: “In 2012, Commander Gray and her wife Sharon moved to New Zealand after falling in love with the country during a campervan holiday. ‘The most obvious thing to do was join the Royal New Zealand Navy,’ she said.”
The skipper brave and sure
Or returning to 1789...
I see what you did there 😉
That was the very first thing that captured my attention too.
““In 2012, Commander Gray and her wife Sharon moved to New Zealand after falling in love with the country during a campervan holiday. ‘The most obvious thing to do was join the Royal New Zealand Navy,’ she said.””
How the #$(%# are we supposed to defeat China and Russia in World War 3 if this is what our militaries are reduced to? Answer, we cannot. So the OBVIOUS question then becomes: Why the hell are we trying to start WW3, by starting wars in their backyards?
The most important thing here is whether or not the captain was “vaccinated”.
The ship sunk, bit no feelings were hurt.
Looks like she is holding a shillelagh. Maybe an inside joke for keeping the crew in line?
There were some SERIOUS babes on that island. I think some of the people involved in the movie ended up staying there.
It looks like something the Maoris gave her to chase away the albatrosses that have been swarming the ship since she took command.
If you're referring to 'McHale's Navy', that was filmed on the Universal backlot in California:

...and yes there were serious babes back in the day in Hollywood.
