Peace is not the absence of war. Peace is a condition in which neighboring peoples respect each other’s right to exist and prosper. Israel has seen absence of war but has never known peace. This is because Israel’s neighbors have never respected Israel’s right to exist and prosper. Hamas and Hezbollah are militant groups attempting to destroy Israel. Israel is quite justified in trying to destroy these groups, and a ceasefire that leaves these groups in place cannot result in peace. Therefore there will be no ceasefire so long as these groups exist.
