Another subject where the Harris campaign is making a lot of false statements is their claim that middle class people pay more income taxes than billionaires. In certain cases, it’s possible for middle class people to pay a slightly higher income tax RATE than billionaires, but the billionaires pay far more in total dollars. The Harris campaign is saying that some middle class people pay more taxes than billionaires, which clearly means more total dollars. If they’re talking about tax rates than they must use the precise term “tax rate”. That’s a completely false statement that middle class people pay more total dollars of income taxes than billionaires. The top 1% of federal taxpayers pays about 45% of all federal income taxes, so generally speaking, very wealthy people are paying their fair share and often are paying much more than their fair share.
Very high income people can end up with a federal tax rate of around 24%, because long-term capital gains are taxed at a rate of 23.8%, on gains above $250K. The reason for this lower rate relative to ordinary business income, is because capital investments are risky and people often take losses (sometimes close to 100%) on investments in financial assets. There have been dozens of biotech companies where investors took big losses because the companies were unable to develop commercially successful products. The Nasdaq market is littered with stocks trading way below their initial offering prices. As an incentive for people to invest in risky start-up companies which can grow massively and create thousands of jobs when they succeed (e.g. Regeneron Inc.), our federal government only taxes long-term capital gains at 23.8%. But keep in mind that state income taxes can add on as much as another 14% to the total income tax rate in high-tax states like California. People like the Google billionaires are keeping California out of bankruptcy with the massive capital gains tax payments they make to that state.

Secretary of State Adrian Fontes revealed today over 218,000 voters were improperly recorded as having provided proof of citizenship, a requirement for voting in state & local elections - - more than double the initial estimate, raising major concerns about AZ’s voter rolls mere weeks before our upcoming election. Fontes announced the error, which affects more Republicans than Democrats, but provided little transparency on the root cause or immediate solution.
