The FAA is reportedly struggling to modernize its aging air traffic control (ATC) systems, putting the safety and efficiency of the national airspace at risk, according to a recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
TechSpot reports that the GAO report reveals that 37 percent of the FAA’s ATC systems are unsustainable, while another 39 percent are potentially unsustainable due to factors such as lack of parts and funding shortfalls. Alarmingly, 58 of the 105 unsustainable and potentially unsustainable systems are critical to the safety and efficiency of the national airspace. Despite the urgent need for modernization, the FAA has been slow to update its most critical and at-risk systems. Some modernization projects are not scheduled for completion for another 10 to 13 years, while the FAA lacks plans to modernize other systems in need, three of which are at least 30 years old.

Plenty of cash for all kinds of other dumb crap.
That being said, sometimes older is better. Modern systems could get taken out by oh idk Crowd Strike or BSOD.
The FAA has the best technology of the 1970’s........
Obama. Recovery Act. 111th Congress. Omnibus bill. National transportation infrastructure. $48 billion. Shovel-ready.
Please contact your Congress critter and ask them WTF happened?

WOKE
Gee...who’s in charge of that...
“But...but...but...”
Time to give a contract to Elon Musk to manage US Air Traffic.
MY bet is he could upgrade the whole system from A to Z and fire half the government bureaucrats.
It’s all good. Magic Artificial “Intelligence” (AI) is going to handle it.
Rest easy, travelers. The F.A.A. is in the capable hands of the Sec’y of Transportation.
Yup. Mayor Pete is SMART.
Well DEI! We, I mean duh!
“The FAA is reportedly struggling to modernize its aging air traffic control (ATC) systems”
there’s no “reportedly” about it: the FAA has REPEATED failed at upgrading the ATC for at least three decades ... i think they’re still running the ATC on old IBM 360 mainframes, using gigantic ancient CRTs ...
“Rest easy, travelers. The F.A.A. is in the capable hands of the Sec’y of Transportation.”
just make sure the little bugger washes his hands real good with Lava AND GoJo before he actually touches any of it ...
1. DEI promotions and employees with minimal to no education in management are asked to provide professional
expertise to logistics and supply acquisition.
2. Most of the large FAA facilities are at 65 to 70% staffing. This results in mandatory overtime and burned out employees,
resulting in early retirement or moving 'up' to non-controller positions.
3. GAO and Congressional Oversight should have stepped in decades ago with professional accountants and business managers.
4. The employees' union, NATCA, runs roughshod over management, stifling any thought of creative measures to shift allotment.
These are but some of the more egregious issues as there are many more to be addressed.
~ I speak as a 35 year Federal/FAA employee
I suspect certain Federal employee unions blocked progress on it. And now, with DEI pilots arriving on the scene, it might not in the end be an improvement.
It’s not bad tech. It’s Didn’t Earn It hiring. FAA knows it but won’t admit it.
