Man charged with attempted assassination of Trump at Florida golf course as case is assigned to Judge Aileen Cannon

Prosecutors on Tuesday filed the charge of attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate against Ryan Wesley Routh, the man they say camped outside of Donald Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course for hours on end, armed with a rifle that he pointed through a chain-link fence with a clear shot to the next hole where the former president was headed on September 15.

Routh, allegedly “stalked” Trump in Florida for more than a month, prosecutors told a federal magistrate judge on Monday, with cell phone data allegedly placing Routh at the golf course as well as Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence across several days between August 18 and the day Routh was arrested.

Routh was originally charged with two gun-related offenses, including obliteration of a firearm’s serial number and possessing a firearm while a convicted felon, while the investigation continued.

Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee who oversaw, and later threw out, the federal criminal classified documents case against the former president, was randomly assigned to oversee the case, court documents show.

The charges against Routh also include possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer, in addition to the two previous gun charges Routh faced.

According to the indictment, Routh “did forcibly assault, oppose, impede, intimidate, and interfere with ‘Secret Service Special Agent #1,’ an officer and employee of the United States.”

Routh is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.

In this image from video provided by the US Senate, Aileen M. Cannon speaks remotely during a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight nomination hearing to be US District Court for the Southern District of Florida on July 29, 2020, in Washington, DC.

Does this mean the State of Florida is now in charge of this case?

I had read that there is no Federal statute regarding attempted murder unless the victim is a Federal Official.

So is this games being played by the FEDS to stop Florida from prosecuting Routh for attempted murder of CITIZEN TRUMP?

According to the indictment, Routh “did forcibly assault, oppose, impede, intimidate, and interfere with ‘Secret Service Special Agent #1,’ an officer and employee of the United States.”

Everything I have read so far has said that Routh didn’t resist arrest and was arrested by county sheriff deputies. so I am going to say that they are using the fact that Routh pointed his rifle in the direction of the SS Officer to count as did forcibly assault, oppose, impede, intimidate, and interfere with ‘Secret Service Special Agent #1,’ an officer and employee of the United States.”

I would say the forcibly assault is BS.

With these charges I am going to guess that Routh is now in Federal custody.

If so he is not long for this world.

Yeah, the FEDS can add that to the two Federal gun charges.

But, the attempted murder of Citizen Trump is another case.

It looks to me that the Feds are now going to force Judge Cannon to tell the Feds that they have NO STANDING when it comes to attempted murder of a citizen. Attempted murder is a state law.

Of course, the leftist media will make a lot of noise that Judge Cannon is biased, etc.

Fun fact. Oswald was not charged with any Federal crime regarding the assassination of JFK. There was no Federal law at the time against killing the President. That changed, of course.

Now there are and have been Federal laws against murder of anyone on Federal property like a Post Office.

I think your point is a good point and I tend to concur.

I do wonder, though, if a former president counts. It’s possible.

August 14, 1936 — A crowd variously estimated at 10,000 to 20,000 gathered at Owensboro, Kentucky on this day to watch the last ever public hanging in the United States.

"Routh, allegedly “stalked” Trump in Florida for more than a month"

It would make sense for Trump to buy a geo fence around him at all times with a 1 mile, or so diameter. Then he could track who any stalkers were by their cell phone number.

The legal beagles at the State of Florida do not believe a former president as the victim can be tried in a Federal Court.

I refer you to 18 U.S. Code § 879 - Threats against former Presidents and certain other persons

(a) Whoever knowingly and willfully threatens to kill, kidnap, or inflict bodily harm upon—
(1) a former President or a member of the immediate family of a former President;
(2) a member of the immediate family of the President, the President-elect, the Vice President, or the Vice President-elect;
(3) a major candidate for the office of President or Vice President, or a member of the immediate family of such candidate; or
(4) a person protected by the Secret Service under section 3056(a)(6);

shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both.

Thanks.

So according to this, Ryan Routh’s maximum prison sentence would be 5 years.

Versus the State of Florida attempted murder laws probably carry a life sentence.

Now I see why the State of Florida wants to prosecute Routh for attempted murder.

Also, this US Code 879 only refers to THREATS TO KILL and does not refer to actual attempts to kill.

“””I refer you to 18 U.S. Code § 879 - Threats against former Presidents and certain other persons shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both.”””
