Johnson unveils new plan to avoid shutdown amid tension in GOP, scraps Trump-backed election measure

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., unveiled a new plan for avoiding a partial government shutdown on Sunday after a House GOP rebellion derailed a more conservative measure last week.

House leaders are aiming for a vote this week on a short-term extension of the current year’s government funding levels, called a continuing resolution (CR), to give congressional negotiators more time to hash out federal spending priorities for the new fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.

It must pass the House and Senate by the end of the day on Sept. 30 to avert a shutdown. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., signaled the plan had bipartisan support in both chambers.

The new measure, closer in line with what Senate Democrats and the White House had called for than his first plan, is likely to spark fury among the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus and its allies. But most Republicans are wary of the political fallout of failure just weeks before Election Day.

Johnson took a swipe at the upper chamber for failing to pass a single one of their 12 appropriations bills, writing to House GOP colleagues on Sunday that because "Senate Democrats failed to pass a single appropriations bill or negotiate with the House on an acceptable topline number for FY 2025, a continuing resolution is the only option that remains."

The plan would keep the government out of a partial shutdown through Dec. 20. House GOP leadership staff told reporters on Sunday that Democratic requests for additional dollars were rebuffed, and extra disaster relief funds that were in Johnson’s initial plan have been removed.

The people want a government. The GOP cannot provide it.

They are finished.

The voting measure is great but there is zero possibility it can become Law with Biden in the White House.

No. The GOPe fallout is decade after decade, year after year, day after day, minute after minute.

Then we shut down until he is not.

This is the MIC Johnson is working for here. Not the people.

The only thing that matters is getting Trump elected in November.

So a CR and nothing more?

Sounds ok to me. Let’s focus on the election and get more MAGA in the congress to pass a real budget.

No, spending money my Grandchildren do not have is ALWAYS a perpetual priority.

We can walk and chew gum at the same time. This is not a single issue line item fight. Only to an MIC front man would it be...

The majority of the American people don’t hate the Government.
The majority of the American people don’t want to shut down the Government.

This nonsense plays out year after year and a few folks get to beat their chests and yell ‘shut it down’, and then nothing happens.

“The people want a government. The GOP cannot provide it.”

Agree. GOP has no core political philosophy, poor leadership, and is not unified. Most GOP legislators are content with capitulation and serving big donors. The nation is heading toward one party rule by socialists/communists.

“The majority of the American people don’t want to shut down the Government.”

The reason why is because they have been lied to. They think they won’t get their SS and welfare and food credits anymore.

It is an absolute lie and psyops.

And we always lose on these.

If THEY provide a crappy bill and we veto it and the gubmint gets shut down they run to the MSM and cry that we’re shutting down the government to hurt old people.

If WE provide a bill and the dems refuse to pass it and the government shuts down, they run to the MSM and cry about how we’re shutting down the government to hurt old people.
