Well, It Looks Like Trump May Actually Have Helped Himself in the Debate

I don't think it helps to just say what people want to hear. The truth matters. And the truth is that it was not a great debate for Donald Trump on Tuesday night. I suspect he did little to no debate prep in advance, and every time Kamala baited him, he took the bait.

It goes without saying that Kamala Harris lied her way through the debate, but the moderators didn't fact-check her once, yet Trump was "fact-checked" between five and seven times — and the fact-checks weren't always accurate.

Perhaps because of what I do for a living, I'm extra critical of Donald Trump's performance. I've been pointing out for days now what Trump needed to do in the debate, and seeing him miss opportunity after opportunity was beyond frustrating. But according to a report from Reuters, undecided voters largely shifted to him after the debate.

"Kamala Harris was widely seen as dominating Tuesday's presidential debate against Republican former president Donald Trump, but a group of undecided voters remained unconvinced that the Democratic vice president was the better candidate," the outlet reported.

Reuters interviewed ten undecided voters before and after a debate. Six of them shifted toward supporting Trump, three leaned toward Harris, and one remained uncertain. That's a rather solid outcome for Trump.

"Although the sample size was small, the responses suggested Harris might need to provide more detailed policy proposals to win over voters who have yet to make up their minds," wrote Reuters.

It gets worse for Kamala.

Five said they found Harris vague during the more than 90-minute debate on how she would improve the U.S. economy and deal with the high cost of living, a top concern for voters.

The encounter was particularly important for Harris, with a weekend New York Times/Siena College opinion poll showing that more than a quarter of likely voters feel they do not know enough about her, in contrast to the well-known Trump.

The Trump converts said they trusted him more on the economy, even though all said they did not like him as a person. They said their personal financial situation had been better when he was president between 2017-2021. Some singled out his proposal to tax foreign imports, although economists say that is likely to raise prices.

Four of those six also said Harris did not convince them she would pursue different economic policies than Democratic President Joe Biden, a Democrat they largely blame for the high cost of living.

"I still don't know what she is for," said Mark Kadish, 61, an entrepreneur in Florida. "There was no real meat and bones for her plans."

Four of the voters are women and six are men; eight are white and two are Black. All have voted for both Democratic and Republican candidates in the past.

None of the fact-checks were accurate.

Nobody wants to listen to an obnoxious nasty sounding bitch. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard.

She came across as a screeching harpy, and it didn't matter what she said. Her very manner of speaking aroused a primal fight instinct.

Fact check: partisan moderator arguing with only one candidate.

How brain-dead do you have to be, to be "uncertain"? I mean, you have to be even more brain-dead to lean towards Heels Up, but still.

Isn’t it rather childish to criticize the Candidate simply because they supposedly took the bait and answered a question.

Trump didn’t get angry or upset and he didn’t interrupt her.

All he did was take the time to actually answer the questions he was asked.

Is that really losing a debate?

Isn’t she been criticized for not answering the questions?

All we are really saying is that he should have been more clever and evaded the questions he was asked.

Big deal.

He won the debate.

The last few sentences speaks volumes.

“Perhaps winning the debate isn’t the goal candidates should be striving for. Perhaps the real goal is winning over undecided voters. And if this Reuters survey is any indication, Trump achieved that.”

There were a couple of other small focus groups of undecided voters (reported here on FR). The post-debate interviews sounded much the same as the Reuters group.

Compare Harris with her nasally, nasty voice to a Tulsi Gabbard who is a pleasure to listen to.

i hope this is for real in a broader sense. considering how people reacted to all the indictments, it may be that 1.
Americans don’t like ambushes and unfairness, and empathize w/the underdog; 2. Americans don’t like smirky Mean Girls or 3. Americans aren’t looking for a Clever Master of Repartee but rather someone Genuine and Informative, Forthcoming and Serious.

Always been a mystery to me how anyone can possibly be an "uncertain" voter.

Trump could have done better but he mostly needed to avoid some big mistake.
Trump did that.

Harris needed to convince the undecided to trust her and like her.
Harris did neither.

A “fact check” by a moderator means the moderator is debating instead of moderating.

When Candy Crowley did this one time to Romney, it was generally denounced as inappropriate.

Where's Walzo? Find Tim Walz for extra credit! Fun for everyone!

The laughter and the giggling are a self-manufactured distraction to turn attention away from her nervousness, incompetence and inexperience.

I truly have lost patience for this Trump could have done better argument.

Where the hell is the outrage of Trump being the victim of a three against one ambush debate? Where? Where is the outrage? For goodness sakes that is where the focus needs to be! Every political pundit on the right the middle and yes even the left needs to take a lesson from Megan Kelly!

To the extent Trump got angry, most undecideds appear to have recognized it as a righteous anger resulting from biased questions, one-sided fact checking and a general 3-on-1 tag team debate.

When it comes to Presidential elections, some people read tea leaves. Some people read the stock market, which is generally as good as reading tea leaves I think. However, maybe not in this case.

Harris’s plan to tax unrealized capital games can tank the stock market and the world economy. If she wins, she just might get a Democratic Congress and follow through. Even a Republican House or Senate might not hold back the tide.

My general impression is that stocks fell after the debate and have since rebounded. Either investors are burying their heads in the sand, or they see no real impact from the debate.

As an aside. Is there any way to get around the taxation of unrealized capital gains? Perhaps by changing citizenship. The very rich might be wise to look consider alternatives. Indonesia? Switzerland? The Bahamas? Perhaps the only people who will invest in the American stock market will be foreigners.

True. It really is all about the undecideds. It’s not about the reaction of committed pro-Trump or pro-Harris voters. That’s the reason that as a rule, Freepers tend to over-react to anything less than a perfect debate performance from Trump. Different voters focus on different things. The majority of undecideds, to their credit, appear to have recognized the bias of the debate moderators, Harris’s vague answers and posturing, and Trump’s superior policies and track record.
