The debate between Harris and Trump wasn’t close — and 4 other takeaways

1. This debate wasn’t close. The majority of the focus coming into Tuesday was about how Harris would handle her first-ever presidential debate with someone who had been on this stage many times. Could she answer questions about her position shifts; parry attacks from Trump, someone who tries to be the alpha on these stages; could she answer the attack that she’s light on policy; and could she appear “presidential”?

Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and former President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speak during a presidential debate. Politics NPR fact checked the Harris-Trump presidential debate. Here's what we found She may have seemed nervous at first, but she quickly found her voice and more than acquitted herself well. All of those questions were quickly dispatched:

She explained her shift on fracking (“My position is that we have got to invest in diverse sources of energy, so we reduce our reliance on foreign oil”).

Harris was far more dominant than Trump, from beginning to end. She called him “weak and wrong,” inverting the political cliché that “strong and wrong” beats “weak and right.” Harris answered questions, then redirected and baited him on a host of issues.

She got under Trump’s skin — something he usually tries to do — by saying that people at his rallies leave “early out of exhaustion and boredom,” painting him as out of touch and a bad businessman for inheriting $400 million “on a silver platter and then filed for bankruptcy six times,” and chiding him for being “fired by 81 million people” in the 2020 election and now being “confused” about losing.

(snip)

And on the presidential question — Harris was calm, in command and in control and looked to the future, distinguishing herself from both Biden and Trump.

We are always Trump here while the Election is on. Your never-Trump buddy Reno checked out, because the big boss laid down the rules. You are still but hurt about DeSantis.

I don’t know why anyone expected anything different. The only reason Trump “won” the debate with Biden was obvious collusion between the media and the deep state. They wanted Biden out. Now they have to prop up a Harris so Trump “lost” the debate.

I’m beginning to believe that some, perhaps many, on this board must also wear blinders when they drive a car.

“What concern of mine is what is approaching from the left or right?”

Then wonder why they got T-boned.

Makes as much sense as a military operation ignoring its flanks.

It’s funny. Every poll shows Trump won the debate, including one 92-8. But I come here and it’s all doom and gloom. Trump did exactly what he needed to do. It was methodical.

“The Trump debate was 3 against 1”

That’s no excuse for Trump’s poor debating.

Clay and Buck are strongly criticizing Trump now. They correctly say he fell into many of Harris’s traps, and didn’t insist on answers from Harris on some of her lies and flip flops. Inexcusable. He doesn’t need the moderators to bring up all of the subjects.

Trump wasn’t sensing what was going on in the debate. Scary.

A caller to C&B said that if Trump would show just a little bit of humility and perhaps admit he didn’t do perfectly in the debate, he’s win over a lot of voters.

I think Trump will never learn to avoid sideshows, repetition and bragging. I think he can’t change. Maybe this debate will be like a smack by a 2x4 and will nudge him a bit. His failure in this debate could be a blessing in the long run.

By the way, I don’t like Clay & Buck but it’s on during my lunch hour and I typically listen up to their 1st commercial.

If you read Lazamataz’s other articles you can see he is totally in the tank for Harris.

Are you freakin insane?

I was for Trump before you even knew him to be a candidate.

They need to cut all government funding to NPR. Maybe that will get done if Trump can beat the vote fraud.

It was very obvious that all her lines had been well rehearsed.

Is there something wrong with "preparation"?

He didn't take her seriously enought to prepare and ended up missing several opportunities.

No, Trump’s team once again got played by the “Deep State”, Central Bankers, and Globohomo cabal. Heart may be in the right place, but he listens to fools regardless.

So Trump's team did not expect that I guess.

His prep team was awful.

I don’t blame Trump ‘s prep team. I think Trump is uncoachable. Apparently Trump spent the days before the debate playing golf and holding rallies. Verifiable facts and examples are needed to convince people that the other side is lying. A general understanding of a topic might actually be enough for governing . They are not convincing in a debate.

We Freepers could make a pretty accurate list of the dishonest accusations against Trump. The left has been using the same ones for years. He should have been ready with a quick response, refuting each, and then pivoted to the economy and the border invasion.

We have to remember that Trump is not a politican. He’ll lose and gain some votes due to that reason.

Bingo.

He should have been ready with a quick response, refuting each, and then pivoted to the economy and the border invasion.

This isn't kindergarten. He knows damned well we're in a war for survival. So he goes out to play golf? The only time one does that is to chill out AFTER the prep is done. Instead, he's so drunk on adulation that he blows off doing the job in preference for playing the part. He can do that crap after he's won. So far, he's blowing it, making enemies out of people he should enlist, and pretending the adulation he's getting represents a landslide adequate to overcome the fraud. There's no indication of that.
