Eons ago, while enrolling in a local Catholic school on Oahu, we were warned by the principal that we’d be called haoles, but to let it go unanswered. And we were, and we did. Resident of the place were sometimes known as local boys, but we called them plugs. Don’t know why.

Yeah. Oahu is rough. Especially the homesteads. I worked there for a couple years. I lived in a nice place in Lani Kai. A couple of tourists were walking along the beach talking about Hawaii and their customs. They saw a native Hawaiian walking along and they asked him, “It seems you live here going by your clothes. Do you mind if we ask you “Do you pronounce it Ha-why-ee or Ha-Vaa-ee?”

He responded with “Ha-Vaa-EE.”

I need to ponder this.
