Never, in the 20-plus years it had been issuing outlooks, had the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted so many tropical storms to develop in the Atlantic hurricane basin, with conditions across thousands of miles of ocean aligned perfectly.
“That’s the highest forecast that we’ve had,” Ken Graham, National Hurricane Center director, announced at the annual preseason media briefing in May. So the idiots forecast a busy season. Then they re-issue a forecast in July-August to dial down the forecast, then they issue another forecast in September - October either dialing it down further or increasing number of storms depending on activity since the last forecast. At the end of the season: “We were pretty accurate…next season will be an even greater threat due to global climate change.” Rinse and repeat the cycle for next year.
