The first hurricane of 2024 was named Beryl, but the first named storm was Alberto, which never reached hurricane status. Every tropical storm and hurricane that forms each year gets a predetermined name. Names for hurricanes are predetermined years in advance by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The WMO keeps six lists of 21 names in alphabetic order that are rotated every six years
