Looks like a very confused build. Long barrel for range and velocity, red dot for CQB, and angle/offset irons in case the red dot failed? Would have been better off with an inexpensive scope and rings.

The FBI has released the first photos of the AR-15 rifle that Thomas Matthew Crooks used in his attempt to kill former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania last month. The images show that Crooks — a 20-year-old gun nut — broke down the semi-automatic DPMS DR-15 rifle into two pieces and stowed it in a black SwissGear backpack as he made his way through the Butler, Pa. rally crowd. A closer look at the weapon reveals an approximately three-inch chunk missing from the gun’s buttstock, which could be where the police sniper’s bullet struck before the Secret Service sniper finished Crooks off with a headshot. “Thomas Crooks’ rifle broken down as was likely done for transport and the backpack recovered onsite,” The FBI captioned the bombshell new image. A separate photo showed the rifle fully assembled and positioned next to a ruler, which pegs its length at around 36 inches from stock to barrel. The gun’s receiver has been scrawled with some white markings, which the FBI notes it had drawn on the weapon. It was known from previous reporting that the rifle had been purchased by Crooks’ father a decade ago. The agency also released images of two improvised explosive devices in the trunk of Crooks’ car — with the receiver enabling remote detonation set in the “off” position. The bureau said the devices had “several problems with the way they were constructed.” One of the homemade bombs was built inside what looks to be a green ammo can, a wire leading out the back is haphazardly taped to the side of the container and connected to a small device that appears to be equipped with a small antenna. The trunk also contains another backpack, a laptop bag, and a spray bottle filled with a clear liquid.

Big deal and who really gives a sh*t what his rifle looked like. What we want to know is, who was he working with and who set up the Secret Service to be A-F*ing-WOL the whole morning.
At least that’s the suggested as the best methods to conceal a medium range rifle in the FBI asset training handbook. Next will be the explosives assembly preferred.
As least not disassembled like this in a back pack.

And who in the campaign picked a venue where would be assassins armed with a rifle would have clear shots at Trump from a distance?
We need to know who in the campaign did this and investigate to see if there was any connection between them, the SS, the FBI and the alleged shooter.

The article labels him a “gun nut” but never mentions the existence of any other guns. The article also says that the dad bought the rifle at least a decade ago. I don’t see how that makes the shooter a gun nut other than he was a nut who used A gun criminally. But we all know that’s not what “they” mean.

DPMS didn’t ship that gun like that in 2013 - MLOK does not appear in production until a year later as Magpul was still designing it at that time; the gun was originally bought in 2013. MLOK doesn’t ship until 2014.
If you can’t and we’re going in a building, I’ll use the Saiga 12 and you can overwatch. :P

Also, I think that’s an Aero upper or at least handguard. Those didn’t ship on DPMS guns at all in 2013.

That barrel looks like a 16.5” with a carbine length gas system not really all that long, pretty standard for the majority of AR-15/M-forgeries that have been sold for the past two decades. If Crooks brought something with a 20” barrel with him, that would most certainly be an oddball configuration as the rifle length ARs fell out of style years ago; 20” is only making a resurgence in the past couple of years with “retro” rifles becoming a thing.
And barrel is a 16” not a 20”. But DPMS does indeed ship them that way. I think that front grip, angle sights and red dot are added by him. Glad he didn’t trust a scope and decided he needed red dot. He picked a speed tool when precision was what he needed.
