WASHINGTON -- The federal government will restart its free at-home COVID tests program in September as officials prepare the country for the upcoming respiratory virus season.
Dawn O'Connell, assistant secretary for preparedness and response at the Department of Health and Human Services, said Friday that this is the seventh time the Biden-Harris administration has allowed Americans to order over-the-counter tests at no charge.
It's not clear when the website, COVID.gov/tests, will come back online. The website stopped accepting orders in early March.
"As families start to move indoors this fall and begin spending time with their loved ones, both very old and very young, they will once again have the opportunity to order up to four new COVID-19 tests free of charge and have them sent directly to their homes," O'Connell told reporters. "These tests will help keep families and their loved ones safe this fall and winter season."

So, this thing tells you if you have a cold. And the result is that you stay home and take cold median. Or you power through and go to work like you always have. And if you go to work you give the cold to 30% of the office who will pass it around until 30% of Americans get a cold that year. How is this different than every year in the past hundred? Why do we need the test?
I just tested myself and time in a week just to go to the Dr office. You have to have a negative test to see the Dr about a friggin cold

I could have used them 2 weeks ago when my 2 adult sons and I had Covid. I had to buy Covid tests to find out we had it.

It’s a scratch off - each choice is YES.
My wife came back from California twelve days ago with a ‘bad cold’. But unlike a cold she could barely walk, in fact the airport put her in a wheelchair, and was incoherent. Tested positive. Called doctor the next day who prescribed paxlovid. First day she slept all day. Second day she was feeling much better. By the fourth day she was back to normal.
We laugh and should laugh at the hype, but Covid/Wuhan/China virus is real and can kill you. All three times my wife has contracted it, it has knocked the crap out of her, not like a cold at all.
They are not “free” if the government (i.e. the taxpayers) is paying for it.
