In what may be a surprise blow to Democrats' chances of holding a key red state seat in the U.S. House, Alaska Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom announced Friday she is suspending her campaign for Congress.
Dahlstrom was in what was essentially a three-way race with incumbent Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola and Republican Nick Begich III, who comes from a prominent political family in The Last Frontier.
While Dahlstrom did not immediately endorse Begich, she suggested in comments announcing her withdrawal that her reason for running was to see Peltola defeated.
"I entered this race because Alaskans deserve better representation than what we have received from Mary Peltola in Washington," Dahlstrom said in a statement.

From election night reporting:
"Peltola Finishes First in Alaska House Primary, With Begich as Top Challenger"
"The conservative son of a prominent liberal Alaska political family came in second in a ranked-choice primary that could play out similarly to 2022, when Republicans split their votes and elected a Democrat."
---
Dahlstrom was endorsed by Trump but I believe Begich has the better chance of winning that race. And we need every win we can get. Remember Alaska has ranked-choice voting which is designed to make sure the uni-party candidate always wins.
Good for her! Props well deserved.
And they are trying to get rid of the stupid ranked vote. Good for them.
Maybe a three way House race should be as rare as a three-legged ballerina.
That is nice to see. Here in Orgon the Republicans are definitely morons. They ran candidates to split the vote for governor and for mayor of my Redmond hometown.
Begich? His father and his whole family are Democrats. Does anyone know anything about this guy? How did he get to be a Republican in an entirely Democrat family?
Nick Begich Jr. doesn’t have a Wikipedia page. Nick Sr. (his father, I guess), the Democrat Congressman who disappeared in 1972 does, as does Mark Begich (probably old Nick’s son and young Nick’s brother), another Democrat. Uncle Joe Begich, who stayed behind in Minnesota and only made it to the state legislature — another Democrat — also has one.
I thought, that the jungle primary was supposed to weed out candidates to have two left.
Now, I see there coming out of the primary.
This thing is really screwed out!
Maybe Kennedy started a trend!
Okay, I see now that this is Nick III. Still no wikipedia page.
He's a conservative. A much better choice to represent us in DC. Definitely better than RINO Nancy Dahlstrom. At least she's smart enough to know when to bow out. More than I can say about Sarah Palin.
This is outstanding news. However:
In the 8/20 primary, the incumbent liberal Democrat got more votes than Begich + Dahlstrom **COMBINED**. And she cleared 50%, which means she would win (if this had been a general election) even WITHOUT the asinine provisions of Rigged Choice Voting.
If Peltola can replicate that performance in November in what is essentially a 1-on-1 matchup, then Alaska isn’t the state we think it is. And she just might. But the chances of GOP success just went up considerably, though nowhere near a slam-dunk, not even close.
People who don’t have any idea think that Alaska is a totally Republican state because it always votes that way for President, it elected Don Young to Congress for 136 years, and normally goes our way in the Senate & Governor elections.
Alaska voter registration: 24% Republican. That’s not a typo. “Independents” (about 65%) are the ones who determine election outcomes. Keep that in mind when the “solid Republican” state goes a little haywire sometimes.
Total BS. She's a RINO ladder climber who's out for herself. She never stood a chance of being elected but it got her name out there. At least she had the sense to drop out before it's too late. But she did so under a lot of pressure.
It’s a jungle primary that results in 4 top finishers going into the general for a ranked choice voting general election. Hence, why Trump’s rally against Lisa Murkowski last time around actually helped her - she still had a small handful of Republican support, and then all of the Democrats rallied to her to stick it to Trump...prior to that, their vote was split among the Democrats and some polls suggested Murkowski might not even make the cut.
Begich announced a run against Don Young in the primary years ago (prior to ranked choice and jungle primaries) to oust him from the right. He continued to run after Young’s death and after the primary rules were changed. A handful around here falsely claimed he got into the race to split the vote from Sarah Palin, when he was running well before she ever announced and also was running to challenge Don Young as an incumbent, something Palin was not going to do.
“A handful around here falsely claimed he got into the race to split the vote from Sarah Palin, when he was running well before she ever announced”
Quite right. I love Sarah but she screwed the pooch on this one, didn’t learn anything from the special election outcome in August, and muddied the waters again in November instead of withdrawing.
Or a one-legged man in an *** kicking contest.
Good news day!
I am very happy to hear this. 1 less anomaly to deal with. Ranked BS didn’t change a single thing, other than to allow for more screwing around with the electorate. There is ZERO chance the Dim party will ever put forth more than 1 well know candidate, waters it down.
He’s conservative. He’s the red-headed step-child of his family.
